Burress Wants to Join Eagles

On the ESPN Philadelphia radio station yesterday, wide receiver Plaxico Burress was actively campaigning to join the Philadelphia Eagles next season.

As a guest on the Brian Baldinger & Harry Mayes Show, Burress said “nothing would make me happier” than joining the Eagles. When speaking about his old friend, Michael Vick, he said, “I really believe he can bring a championship to Philadelphia, and I’d love to be part of that.”

Scheduled to become a free agent March 13th, Burress also went on to say that the Jets have left the door open for him to return, but if the Daily News report is true, and they’re chasing Braylon Edwards, Burress is a goner. In fact, he’s probably a goner whether the Jets sign Edwards or not. A league source told ESPN the Jets are in no rush to re-sign Burress.

Fresh out of prison and expectedly rusty, Burress was injured for much of training camp and took about half the season to get in sync with the Jets offense. He totaled 45 receptions for 612 yards and 8 touchdowns in 2011, with some pretty acrobatic catches. Unfortunately, while Burress was a good red zone threat, he didn’t do enough between the 20s for the Jets.

There are also whispers that he was an active part of the “feud” between fellow wide receiver Santonio Holmes and quarterback Mark Sanchez last season, and there are also reports that he’s told friends privately that he’s not a fan of Sanchez. However much locker room chemistry actually counts, it’s a safe bet that the offense will probably run better if the receivers don’t actively dislike the quarterback.

If (when) the Jets let Burress go, Edwards would be a good fit for the Jets offense. As a member of the Jets in 2009 and 2010, he’s worked with Mark Sanchez before (a huge bonus, considering the Jets have to put the training wheels back on Sanchez) and he stretched the field in a way Burress didn’t.
