Flash Gordon
From JetsWiki
Flash Gordon was a quarterback for the New York Jets from 1977 until 1980.Jets career
Gordon was picked by the Jets in the seventh round of the 1977 NFL Draft. After claiming the starting quarterback position from Richard Todd in 1978, Gordon led the Jets to 8-8 records in his first 2 seasons. Sadly, his plane crashed in mysterious circumstances during the bizarre natural events that plagued the Earth in 1980. No trace of his body was found. Some conspiracy theorists believe he, along with journalist Dale Arden and noted scientist Dr. Zharkov may have been involved in some sort of space travel experiment at the time. After his 'death', the Jets who had shown promise, slipped back to 4-12 in 1980 with Todd as quarterback.
Okay, so it was a very cheesy sci-fi film.
Flash Gordon - The Film
Made in 1980, this film featured Sam J. Jones as Flash Gordon who had to save the world from the nefarious Ming the Merciless in a mental, intentionally campy adaptation of the famous sci-fi comic strip. The story was as basic as space operas get: Ming (played by Max von Sydow) has developed a plan to destroy the Earth, and Flash and his attractive companion Dale Arden are called upon to stop him. Along the way, Flash must battle Ming's goons (using a metal version of a football in one scene) and the temptations of a luscious space princess. Previously the basis for a more straight-faced 1930s adventure serial, the simplistic plot mainly serves as an excuse for spectacular sets and cartoonish action sequences, all set to an appropriately over-the-top rock score by Queen. Certainly not a film to turn to for serious excitement, fine performances, or character development, Flash Gordon has nevertheless developed an appreciative cult of fans who admire the film's humorous approach and the detailed, colorful production design.
