Derby winner Barbaro tops nine-horse Preakness field
Associated Press
BALTIMORE -- Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro tops a nine-horse field for Saturday's Preakness, the smallest for the second leg of the Triple Crown since 2000.
Most Preakness victories, by post positionsPPWinsLast time6 14 1999 (Charismatic) 7 12 2005 (Smarty Jones) 4 12 2000 (Red Bullet) 2 11 1986 (Snow Chief) 3 11 1993 (Prairie Bayou) 5 10 1976 (Elocutionist)
Nine 3-year-olds were entered Wednesday, with post position selections and morning-lines odds to be determined later in the day.
Unbeaten Barbaro, the winner of six straight races, will likely be the prohibitive favorite when he goes against Derby rivals Brother Derek (dead heat for fourth) and Sweetnorthernsaint (seventh) and six new shooters.
The others entered for the 1 3/16th-mile Preakness at Pimlico were Withers winner Bernardini, Gotham winner Like Now, Diabolical, Hemingway's Key, Greeley's Legacy and Platinum Couple.
If all nine start, it would be the smallest field since Red Bullet upset Derby winner Fusaichi Pegasus in an eight-horse field. Fusaichi Pegasus finished second as the 3-10 favorite.
With a small field, post positions aren't a major concern like they were in the Derby, when Brother Derek left from a far outside post -- No. 18 -- and was forced to run wide most of the race.
Afleet Alex won the Preakness in a full field of 14 3-year-olds last year. Derby winner Giacomo was third.
Preakness television coverage begins Saturday, May 20 at 5 p.m. ET on NBC Sports.
Barbaro is set up nice with a small field to contend with
T-Mac 05-17-2006, 03:57 PM Barbaro is set up nice with a small field to contend withI'm betting another horse, but I can have you heavy hitters driving down my odds. faba was that you who sent Sweetnothersaint down 2 pegs, from 7-1 to 5-1 in the last fash?
joewilly 05-17-2006, 04:00 PM anyone else amazed there are only 9 horses running? why?
faba, why don't you enter & ride smizzy

according to max, you won't get much on the stud market
:)
seriously, I have no clue how the money works in horseracing but wouldn't you think they'd be lining up to get into such a prestigous race??

seriously, I have no clue how the money works in horseracing but wouldn't you think they'd be lining up to get into such a prestigous race??No, it's only worth $1M and the winner gets about half. It makes mores sense to run for $250,000 if you think you have chance to win. Now that Visa no longer awards a $5M bonus to any Triple Crown winner, the Derby winner still has the incentive of a huge stud career. Without the possibility of a TC winner, the alure is not as big for the other trainers. 9 is actually a decent size field for the Preakness. The Belmont will be about the same. After the TC is the possibilty of Horse Of The Year. This is normally won based on performances later in the year(fall) in races such as the Travers and Haskell.
joewilly 05-17-2006, 05:28 PM thanks t-mac....... wouldn't stud fees go up on a horse that ran in a top 3 race? where is all the money made in horseracing? isn't it a wealthy sport?
i'm just curious
T-Mac 05-17-2006, 11:03 PM thanks t-mac....... wouldn't stud fees go up on a horse that ran in a top 3 race? where is all the money made in horseracing? isn't it a wealthy sport?
i'm just curiousYeah, and a horse's stud value is worth more than what he can make on the track. This is why after the TC campaign, Barbaro will likely come down with a minor suspensory injury to justify retiring him to stud. Funny Cide is still running(albeit not very well) only because he's a gelding. Afleet Alex and Smarty Jones are probably healthy enough to race today, but they're making their owners more $$ doing what they're doing. The runner-ups in the Derby already have that "black-type." Now in the Preakness we see these newcomers who don't seem to have a prayer. They're not only in it for the purse, but a decent showing could enhance their stud career greatly. There will be more new faces in the Belmont. All they need is to get lucky in one big race. From there they make money getting laid. Sometimes I wish I were a Fusiachi Pegasus.
joewilly 05-18-2006, 10:00 AM thanks t-mac, I appreciate the education. I can't imagine the entry fee is cheap either for such a race, but it would seem like pennies in the big picture. Of the 9 entries, any idea of how many horses will break even for running? any idea how the payout works/
T-Mac 05-18-2006, 03:03 PM Break even? As of now I think Barbaro is "even money" in the morning line. The morning line is set by the track's public handicapper. The odds will move once the pool is open for betting. The horses getting the most action will pay the least odds because you have to divide the pool up that many more times. If you bet $100 on 1-1 odds, the payout is $200($100 for winning the bet + the amt you bet). If Brother Derek goes off at 5-2 and wins, your $100 will get you $350.
joewilly 05-18-2006, 03:38 PM thanks t-mac, I understand the betting odds as a guy placing a bet at the window, i'm curious to the actual payout of the actual horses in the race.
does 1st place pay 1,000,000(or whatever the purse is)
does 2nd place pay $$ to the actual horse
I understand win place show for the betting guy, but how much are the 2nd,3rd 4th 5th (& so on) actual horses getting & where does any paycheck stop?
T-Mac 05-18-2006, 11:00 PM The first horse gets roughly about half the purse, the second about half that, and so on till the 5th or 6th runner depending on the race. I'm pretty sure the Preakness pays up to #6.
joewilly 05-19-2006, 09:08 AM cool, thanks
It costs lots of money to train /slash own horses. I know a couple of local people that own horses and they are money pits to own. The money as T-Mac explained is in the stud fees
OK state your picks here
For me Brother Derek gets a clean ride I think he is the one to beat-even though I will pull for a Barbaro to see a TC winner
joewilly 05-19-2006, 03:57 PM barbaro looks tough to beat the way he ran the derby. should be fun to watch though. anyone know what time the coverage ends tomorrow. I'll tune in 15 minutes before the end & catch the race:)
T-Mac 05-20-2006, 10:12 AM The race goes off about 6:14. Here are the curent odds. At 7-2 Brother Derek has my whole paycheck.

OVER-RATED ... Over-Rated California bred
I've had to listen to his trainer, owner and jockey whine for two weeks about the bad trip they got in the derby and talk all kinds of trash about beating Barbaro in the Preakness, so I'm really looking forward to the beat-down Barbaro is laying on them again today
Jetcane 05-20-2006, 06:44 PM Jeez. poor barbaro. I hope he survives this injury.
Looks like two fractures. Needs major surgery. Man. I am beyond upset. He's not out of the woods yet.

Good call, Ham. Normally the western division is boss but even most of those are Ky-bred. Nice pick on Bernardini, but even if he has the next Secretariat, there won't be a penny of my money on Skeikh Maktoum's horse. That was a VERY nice move, but I'll look elsewhere in the Belmont.

Thanks TMac ... I had the right idea, probably had that exacta IN THE BAG, but sadly Barbaro broke down physically and now I Just hope the horse is okay ... what a crying shame ... shades of Ruffian
Terrible thing to see with Barbaro-only hope they can save him with the fractured leg
Just an update on Barbaro. Things aren't looking too good.

I was actually thinking the same thing. If they don't, they need to get on that like now.
