I had to look up Bobby Murcer. Career high in home runs 33. I was pretty sure he never hit 40 but thought it was worth checking!

Suprised that Musial and Eddie Murray never got there.

One trade the Yankees would love to have taken back was Murcer for Bobby Bonds. Bonds was by many accounts a total drunk. Though they suckered the Angels into giving up Mickey Rivers for him, which was a steal and a half. Still Murcer got screwed. In his prime he played in the mid-1970s he played in Shea with the Yankees and then Candlestick. By the time he got to Wrigley he was broken down from all the bad habits he'd picked up in those 2 parks. And by the time he got back to the Yankees he wasn't an every day player.

Bobby Bond's one season in stripes was a 30-30 year....he went 30-40 twice after leaving the Bronx.

Bonds was the better player when looking at Murcer or Rivers though the latter two were nice players in their own right.

Murcer was probably overhyped as he played when the Yankess were horrible.

For better or worse, stats be damned, Mickey Rivers was a better player for the Yankees than Bonds ever was. Plus, you had the excitement of Mickey 's gambling techniques at the track-bet every horse in the race; you couldn't lose. Or Mickey making fun of Reginald Martinez Jackson-a white guy's first name, a Puerto Rican guy's middle name, and a black guy's last name. Or Mickey wearing a catcher's chest protector on his back in center field when Catfish Hunter pitched one time, since he told Catfish he figured he'd be up against the outfield wall msot of the game anyway.

All hail the Mick!

I was at the Yankee fan festival one time. They had this video batting cage. Mickey hit right before me. He was WASTED. It was like 1pm on a Sunday afternoon.

Mick wasn't so quick that day!

I remember the first season the Yankees had Rivers. They were playing a Spring Training game against the Mets (they played 4-6 against each other back then). I think Kingman hit one some 9 miles for a HR, but the play of the game was Rivers. In the middle innings he walks to home plate to bat. Anyone who remembers Rivers, it was like a 2 minute walk for him from the on deck circle to home plate. He limped badly while walking up there - like he was walking on hot coals. Seriously.

He wallops the 1st or 2nd pitch into the gap in right center. I forget who teh OF was, but he played it cleanly off the wall and fired in to 2nd base. Only problem was Mick the quick was STANDING on 3rd.

The cat could motor. Unreal.

He would have been a strong challenger for MVP in 1976, but slumped badly the last few weeks, and also took himself out of the lineup a couple of times. But he was something else running those bases.
