Yankees | Mussina doesn't expect team to exercise option
Tue, 13 Jun 2006 06:24:10 -0700

Ken Rosenthal, of FOXSports.com, reports New York Yankees SP Mike Mussina does not expect the Yankees to exercise his $17 million option to remain with the team next year and he will most likely have to come to an agreement on a lower salary extension. If he does become a free agent, he said he will not simply sell himself to the highest bidder and that playing for a contender, remaining in the American League and staying close to his home in Montoursville, PA, are the most important things to him. After the Yankees, the Boston Red Sox and Cleveland Indians would be his next two choices while the New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies would be his National League choices.

He wouldn't be a good fit in Boston. Unlike the Yankees, the Red Sox are actually pushing a youth movement (Crisp, Pena, Papelbon, Lester, etc.)

crazycarl, the Yankees have been pushing a talent movement, not a youth movement. If Moose can pitch like he has this year, I'll take him back next year even if hes 55. Why anyone would be happy to have Willy Mo Pena (instead of Arroyo), John MoLester or David Pauly at this point in time beats me. They are unproven commodities.

Pena will be a stud. Was hitting .321 before the injury.
Strikes out like many power hitters but he's the real deal.

Beltran was also laughed at this time last year.

Moose will return. Too much a creature of habit to make a change at this point in his career. Yanks can't afford to lose him either.

Great win tonight by Wang.

Pena will never be a stud.

Lester is an unproven commodity. Pauley looked shakey, but he isn't considered a top level prospect. And he pitched very well against the Yankees. Pena will be a stud. The numbers and raw power don't lie. Give him time. Wait a minute. You guys didn't. No wonder you want him to fail.

the same Pena who strikes out every other at-bat? I'll pass.

True or False: The Yankees have never won a World Series with Mike Mussina on their pitching staff.

I am not yet sold on Moose returning for 2007. Something I still need to think about.

Of course, a 20 win season might help convince me..........

Will moose continue his brilliant pitching in the second half? Basically, he is playing for next year in July, Aug, Sept and Oct. if the Yanks fail to win the WS...Moose may be gone..

Beltran was also laughed at this time last year.

So now you're comparing Willy Mo Pena to Carlos Beltran from last year, who had driven in 100 runs 5 times? More sound GimmeShelter logic
