Jetsfan80 07-13-2006, 04:00 PM Per Rotoworld: "Austin Kearns, Felipe Lopez and Ryan Wagner have been traded from the Reds to the Nationals for the Gary Majewski, Bill Bray, Royce Clayton, Brendan Harris and Daryl Thompson."

If this is true, the Reds got D*ICKED in this one.

I'm not familiar with the youngsters Cincy got in return but on the surface it looks like they got robbed. And isn't Lopez a 2B? I thought they already had a couple of those.
SouthernJet 07-13-2006, 04:02 PM maybe contracts on some of the players reds unloaded were up this year and they didnt think they had a chance to resign..

In any case, they are no longer in the NL Central race in my book. MAYBE the Wild Card chase.
Jetsfan80 07-13-2006, 04:05 PM And on the other end of the deal, the Nats are now contenders for a playoff spot in 2007.
mbn007 07-13-2006, 04:07 PM I do not understand this from the Reds point of view. They received almost nothing that will help them in 2006, and they are right there at this point of teh season. Unless some of these kids are the real deal, or someone is coming up through their system who will supply immediate help, I do not understand this move.

agree, must be some contract nuances or huge prospects comin up tha tthey HAVE to play next year and someone had to go
Exit 117 07-13-2006, 04:23 PM The Reds definitely got destroyed in this trade. I feel bad for their fans.

Jetsfan80 07-13-2006, 04:40 PM On one message board I've visited, some NATS fans are unhappy with the deal. Here is what they said:
"So we're giving up two good young relievers and Clayton for a guy who has never lived up to his potential and a mediocre infielder. We also don't get much younger from this trade... Dammit, I knew Kasten keeping Bowden was a bad move and of course he goes and gives up too much to get one of his Cincy "favorites" in Kearns. Why the hell are we trading Bray and Majewski??? Awful... I get more angry the more I think about it."
"WTF is Bowden thinking. This trade makes no sense. Why would he trade Bray and Majewski? I had a feeling Clayton was gone, but this is insane. FIRE JIM BOWDEN."
Exit 117 07-13-2006, 04:44 PM Must be pretty hard for two different fan bases to be pissed off in the same trade, thinking that their own team got screwed.

Sounds like Moss for Coles....

Don't forget, these are serious Nats fans. They must know a lot more than we do about the players they gave up.
Scott Dierking 07-13-2006, 05:31 PM You have to feel that the Reds felt that they had a spare part in Freel that they will plug in.
With the emergence of Phillips at 2b, it really gave the Reds some flexibility and almost extra players.
They still have Aurilia that they have been platooning around, and Edwin Encarnacion is ready to come off the DL.
Lopez had his breakthrough last year, and has been hot and cold this year. Kearns is in a breakthrough year, but his MO is to get hurt.
Supposedly, the pitchers thay get from DC are pretty good. The Reds bullpen has been horrible. If Guardado lives up to his prior, Coffey gets back in his set up and the new guys fillin, The Reds have a pretty deep bullpen-A MUST in the ballpark they play in.
They must have just felt they had some interchangeable parts, and decided to cash some in.

Agree completely. Lopez is a liability at SS and Kearns has never had the big breakout season many predicted. They probably both are close to arbritration eligible as well.
The Reds problem all season has been getting quality bullpen work after their starters who only go six innings come out.
Majewski and Bray should fit nicely in the 6th and 7th innings. I am not sold on Guardardo closing but at least they addressed their problems to some extent.
Curious to see if they have a deadline deal for a outfielder in the works.
Barton 07-13-2006, 08:27 PM Does this free up Soriano for trade after they just acquired another LFer in Kearns?

I would say yes both Sori and Guillen though the NATS line-up now looks pretty decent for a NL team.

i live in DC and follow the nats pretty closely although a life long yankee fan. bowden is a disaster and i can't understand why he is staying, my understanding was that kastin was bringing in one of the braves assistant gm's. the nats have no desire to compete next year, kastin consistently says that the nats are trying to rebuild the farm system. they have a new stadium due in '08 if the city council (yes, marion berry has been elected again) can get out of their own way. the idea is that the nats are competitive in '09 as '08 will be a great year just to have a real stadium. they need young studs.
soriano better be gone for legite prospects, zimmerman is going to be the 2nd best young 3rd baseman after wright but after that the nats have nothing. hopefully they get something for hernandez and patterson and start the rebuilding process.
