Matt39 07-15-2006, 03:07 PM http://www.rotoworld.com/content/story.asp?sport=MLB&storyid=23448
6. Philip Hughes (http://www.rotoworld.com/content/playerpages/player_main.asp?sport=MLB&id=4091) - RHP Yankees - DOB: 06/24/86 - ETA: June 2007
Previous rankings: mid-2005 #47, 2006 #29
2-3, 1.80 ERA, 19 H, 30/2 K/BB in 30 IP for Single-A Tampa
5-3, 2.75 ERA, 52 H, 76/23 K/BB in 72 IP for Double-A Trenton
Despite the questions regarding his durability, Hughes is baseball’s top pitching prospect right now. The 2004 first-round pick has yet to stumble while being pushed aggressively by the Yankees, establishing himself as one of the Eastern League’s best pitchers even before he turned 20 last month. Hughes throws 91-94 mph with movement and his curveball has come a long way, turning his slider into an afterthought at times. He also has a changeup that projects as a major league pitch. The total package could make him a No. 1 starter in time. The shoulder tendinitis that resulted in Hughes being shut down for a time in 2005 hasn’t recurred this year. If he avoids arm problems, he should have a rotation spot in New York as soon as next May or June. A debut in 2006 can’t be ruled out, but the Yankees have indicated that they’d prefer to leave him in the minors.
madmike1 07-15-2006, 03:09 PM nah it's just my opinion...
We have 3 players in the Top 150? 2 in the Top 60? I see numerous more Mets so madmike, where are our stars that are better then the Mets prospects?

They didn't include Pelfrey because he was just drafted and is in the majors.

If you go to the bottm of the list it says they would've still ranked him below hughes.

Why would you care about this kid? According to you, you would prefer the Yanks needing a bat. Show me a championship series where good hitting over powered good pitching. Never, ever. The '63 Yanks are a good example of pitching shutting down a high powered offense...I remember.

You're officially losing your mind.
We have 20 year old phenom in the minors who was ranked one overal by a website I as checking out so I posted it.
And yes, right now currently, the Yanks could use an extra bat with some pop.
Newsflash: Every team in baseball could use another pitcher. Johnsons been pitching fairly well lately and Wright's been improving.
Watching Andy Phillips, Miguel Cairo Kelly Stinnett and Bubba Crosby hit is hard to watch.

Great point. The yankees have the best pitching prospect in baseball but they should trade him for reggie sanders. LOL

I lose my mind everytime you so called Yankee fans put something out like we need an extra bat rather than a pitcher that can shut down another teams defense.
We have enough fire power in that lineup...especially when a couple guys like Shef and Godzilla get healthy...what we need is another arm or two and I'm hoping Dotel and Pavano (maybe even Ponson, but I doubt that) can provide that needed arm(s). You don't take Chacon out of the rotation because he was pitching wins for us.
How many more runs did you want to score today?

JFF...
Let me start by clarifying. I have been on record all year as saying don't bring in another OF. It isn't worth it. Like I said months ago this team has learned how to play baseball again. They don't sit around waiting for the home run. Much like the 96 team the stats aren't the best offensively but so far they seem to get it done.
Now to my point...if you are talking a marginal OF or a marginal pitcher this team would benefit more from the bat. I think that is what most people are referring to. The Yankees have 2 bats at least in the lineup everyday that probably (for different reasons) shouldn't be in the majors at this point.
If you are talking a front of the rotation starter or an All Star OF, then the front of the rotation guy is the way to go. But that is not happening because everyone needs pitching.

Max, I'm talking about getting a pitcher like Ian Small from the Pirates.

For the long haul that kid might be somebody worth hanging on to. If you are talking about this year, I have to agree an OF would help them more. Snell's ERA would be over 5 in the AL based on how he has pitched so far. He has not thrown a lot of innings in the majors so he wouldn't exactly guarantee the bullpen a night off when he throws.
He is young. Honestly he isn't someone that I wouldn't mind having on the roster. But come playoff time he isn't pitching ahead of any of these guys:
Johnson
Mussina
Wang
Wright
Since they aren't going to land a Zito, the issue remains the same...if Johnson pitches like a # 1 or # 2 they can get it done. Otherwise forget about it.
