Yankees | Interest shown in Green
Sun, 16 Jul 2006 23:26:32 -0700

The New York Post reports the New York Yankees have inquired about Arizona Diamondbacks OF Shawn Green, and a person close to the situation said to play for a contender, Green might waive his no-trade clause. Green's no-trade clause prevents the Diamondbacks from trading him to any team other than the San Diego Padres, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and Oakland Athletics without his permission.

Decent avg guy, very little pop but could hit 10-12 HRs the rest of the way at Yankee stadium, not the base stealer he once was....basically very rapidly declining skills for a pretty high price if I'm not mistaken. Unless the Dodgers are already paying some of his salary and Az agrees to pick up some more, I would look elsewhere.

If I was the Yankees I would definitely pass - he is on a downhilll slide with his skills-

Green salary and cost wise makes sense. Abreu's contract precludes going after another big bat in the offseason even if you dump Sheffield.

Go after a starter and hope Dotel comes in soon. Right now the staff consists of 2 solid starters, iffy Unit and 5-inning Wright. Ponson is as bad as Wright. I know there aren't any frontline starters, but may be Smoltz or Maddux come loose at the deadline. Maddux would probably be a whole bunch cheapers.

By the way-SJ-Green only skipped a game on Yom Kippur. He's not that religious and did so more out of respect to his heritage than devotion. A total nonissue.

In hearing Cash on the radio....if you read between the lines, he's looking for a bat, waiting for Pavano to be ready in August

Pavano, Unit, Moose, Wang, and Wright

Not too bad

Bro Maddux would be garbage in the AL. 100 pitches and a 6 ERA. No thanks.

I feel like a fool for even thinking Pavano can contribute. It would be nice though. Really nice!

I love Pavano (as you all know) so I'm hoping he can come back and give us 10-15 W's a season....the likely hood of that however isn't too good.

The yankees should want no part of Shawn Green...

Green is actually the type of guy the Yankees should persue. But only at a very minimal cost, i.e., no one off the 40 man roster, except for a Shawn Henn type. And part of his salary needs to be picked up.

But he will be a nice compliment to Melky in RF in 2008, if the Yankees get him.

He is not a good enough hitter to justify taking on that salary.

I think thats why those of us who are okay with bringing him here have suggested a way to avoid overpaying him. He's a solid player who would be a good fit in Yankee Stadium but not a good enough fit to justify the salary. Let the Dodgers and D' Backs chip in to make it a workable number.

I would be interested depending on the price. Green could be a guy that can come off the bench in a pinch and deliver.

I don't know that the Yankees would be trying to acquire Green to be an "off the bench" type of guy. He's still capable of hitting around .300 and would benefit from the short porch in RF. I think if they get him it's to play every day.

Barton always liked Shawn Green. And me thinks he could be berry berry good for the Yankees.
