Though there's not much supporting evidence presented, The St. Paul Pioneer Press reports that the Detroit Tigers (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/teams/det/) are close to acquiring Bobby Abreu (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/5698) from the Philadelphia Phillies (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/teams/phi/). The story also says that the Los Angeles Dodgers (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/teams/lad/) are talking with the Cleveland Indians (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/teams/cle/) about third baseman Aaron Boone (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/5838). More (http://us.rd.yahoo.com/SIG=12dtmrakb/**http%3A%2F%2Fwww.twincities.com%2Fmld%2Ftwinciti es%2Fsports%2F15048544.htm)
Yahoo! Sports' Take: The Tigers have denied having interest in Abreu for the last month, probably because they would have to assume Abreu's monster contract. He is owed $13 million in 2006 and $15 million in 2007, plus a $16 million club option for 2008. Because of Abreu's full no-trade clause, Abreu controls his future. He would almost surely demand that option be picked up in order to move to Detroit or anywhere else, meaning he would be owed about $38 million over the next 2½ seasons. That severely limits his trade value. As for the Dodgers, Cesar Izturis (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/6638) is the best defensive third baseman in the league, but the club knows it must give him an occasional break. If L.A. is chasing Boone, Bill Mueller (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/5587)'s knee injury must be really bad. Olmedo Saenz (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/5249) can play third, but is most valuable as a late-inning pinch-hitter. 2:01 p.m. ET

That's a lot of coin to give up. I hope the Tigers don't part with too good of prospects for that.

Regardless the idea of Abreu in the olde english D excites me

He'd be a good fit in Detroit and it would be nice to see them make that type of financial commitment towards a pennant run. How have the crowds been in Detroit anyway? Selling out at all?

Tigers like Soriano, but the price is steep

The Tigers are one of at least four teams playing deadline poker with the Washington Nationals in pursuit of powerful outfielder Alfonso Soriano. And the ante is steep.

The Nationals want three prospects and have asked that prized right-hander Humberto Sanchez be included in the deal. Sanchez (5-2, 3.19 ERA at Triple-A Toledo) has pitched superbly since his promotion from Double-A Erie. He started and pitched one perfect inning in the All-Star Futures Game and has an overall potential that compares favorably to that of rookies Justin Verlander and Joel Zumaya.

Washington officials are requesting a package that includes Sanchez, rising prospect Jair Jurrjens (3-2, 2.78 at Double-A Erie) and a position player. Their first request was 2005 first-round pick Cameron Maybin, but the Tigers will not trade him. The parties may, however, settle on Erie outfielder Brent Clevlen, a former second-round pick, currently with Erie.
Soriano is hitting .282 with 29 home runs -- 10 more than the Tigers' leader, Marcus Thames -- and has 23 stolen bases. Still, the Tigers' interest in meeting the Nationals' demands remains unclear.

Other teams in pursuit of Soriano include the Angels, Mariners, and Yankees.
It would be rare to trade a prospect of Sanchez's caliber for a player who will enter free agency at the end of this season, as Soriano will. However, the Tigers may want to seize the opportunity to infuse power into the lineup for the pennant race.

Have been averaging 30-35,000 a game with 40,000 expected for the entire 3 game homestand against chicago starting tonight.

Like i said in another post, I don't want Abreu.
