View Full Version : Stow, MA
mbn007 08-17-2006, 10:10 AM Help needed. I know this is not the right forum, but there are a slew of MA. folks hanging out here, so here goes.
A firm my company deals with is moving their Headquarters personnel to Stow, MA. Since I deal with these folks quite a bit, it looks like I will be visiting them in their new digs soon up there.
Where is Stow, MA? Near any major cities in MA.? What is the nearest airport, or is it easier to drive up from New York City?
Does Stow, MA have any eateries, movie theaters, etc.? My visits are usually 2-3 days, so what is available as far as things to do after hours.
Thanks all. I checked out Mapquest and Google Maps, but I am interested in hearing from Folks who live there, or are familiar with the area.

Not much happening in Stow. It is a sleepy suburban community. There are a couple of golf courses, but that's about it.
Easy enough drive rfom NY. Mass Pike to Route 495.
Your best bet for nightlife would be to make the 20 minute drive to Framingham or the 40 minute drive to Boston.
JonEJet 08-17-2006, 11:16 AM It's off HWY 20....some nice golf courses out there

If it's only 40 minutes from Boston, I would actually consider staying at a Hotel/Motel between Boston and Stow. I need to take a closer look at the Map I printed, I did not realize it was that close to Boston.
Thanks folks.

I'm not much of a golfer anyway.
But thanks.
JonEJet 08-17-2006, 11:31 AM You might as well stay out there, possibly in Marlborough....some secent spots there to hang out at
Stow is beautiful. It's a sleepy, upscale suburb and home to Stowe Acres - one of the nicest golf courses in Massachusetts. However, you could very well die of boredom there.
Stow is next to Sudbury, which is next to Marlborough. If you want a "livelier" place to stay - I suggest Framingham or Natick - which are a short drive away. However, do make plans to visit Boston. Framingham is only a 1/2 hour away on the Mass Pike and far superior. Put it this way, Boston is the Bellagio in Vegas (I've never been, but I hear it's nice) and Framingham is the Acme Hotel and convention center.

That wouldn't be a bad idea as you would be going against traffic in the morning on the way to the office and vice-versa on the way back.
You may want to think about stating in or around Arlington. This will put you near the T (subway) so that you could get into Cambridge and Boston easily as well as put you on Route 2 which takes you out to Stow.

Ever try driving in and around Cambridge during rush hour? It's enough to make a the Dahli Lama go ballistic. I avoid Cambridge, Sommerville and Arlington at all costs. Pretty sure I'd rather have seven root canals at once.

If he stays out by Alewife he will be fine. I would never wish the Alewifebrook parkway (Route 16/60) on anyone!

Then he should stay in Boston and have the option of taking the Red, Green, Orange and Blue lines. Cambridge is nothing but a tree-hunging communist enclave with bad drivers behind the wheels of their Volvos and Suburus terrorizing the streets.

That ain't Cambridge. It is Brookline or Newton. I'm sure there is some of that in Waltham as well :p

Waltham - not even close. 1986 Ford Rangers maybe and a camino or two. LOL!

Don't know about that. Moody St is becoming very trendy!
True. It's become restaurant heaven. Traffic is horendous. Makes me pine for a quaint little coastal town with pristine beaches and cute little marinas full of weekend fishing boats.

Screw the Cape! Are you thinking Quincy or Ipswich?
mbn007 08-18-2006, 08:45 AM Gainzo and Garb. Thanks for your give and take. I have some time before they move in, and I need to get up there. But I will take all this into consideration.
Thanks to all who responded. Appreciate it - big time.
PFSIKH 08-18-2006, 10:56 AM mbn - Stow is a small town nestled between Maynard, Hudson and Marlboro MA. It is fairly close to Route 2 and 495 so you can get anywhere pretty much. It is small and like someone said there are some golf courses there.
mbn007 03-19-2007, 04:23 PM Thanks for all the help back then folks. I have made a couple of trips there since this thread was posted, and my co-workers suggested we stay in Boston. We did, and while we had a bit of a tough time going back and forth, the nightlife in Boston is much better then anywhere else we would have been.
Caught a Celtics game one time, and ate at a few nice restaurants.
I do not play golf, but someone in our party dragged me to one of these courses, and forced me to play. After about 10 minutes of a quick lesson, there I was, trying to "address" that little round bumpy white critter. I gave it plenty of "addressing" during the afternoon, most of it not printable on a family forum. As far as my score, well, let's just say Tiger Woods has nothing to worry about from me.:bag: One of the players in our four-some told me that he never saw so many markings on 1 scorecard. I have safely burned the evidence, before it gets out on the internet.;)
Now here is the updated question. I will be back there sometime during March 29 - April 12 (I have a few cities to visit, and that will one of them. The itinerary is not close to finished yet). I doubt that I will be able to score tickets to the Bosox. However, will I get to watch any of their games on TV?
Thanks.

Have cable/dish in Boston? If yes then yep, if not then no. All games are on NESN unless they are on FOX/ESPN. The games are on 680 WRKO if you want to listen to them on the radio.

Every bar in Massachusetts will have the Red Sox games on. You're all set.

That's what I thought. Just double checking, since the rumblings came out a few days ago regarding the televising of games locally in the Boston area.
The hotel does/did have cable last time we were there. But the bar scene sounds a bit better.;)
