View Full Version : AL-east vs NL-East, is there really a huge difference?
SouthernJet 09-27-2006, 01:47 PM When you look team by team based on where they are right now, it really doesnt seem like the AL-E is better than the NL-E, ,seem about equal..
discuss team by team matchups of where they are in standings:
Tampa Bay vs Washington:
Is Tampa Better than Nationals? Or a push?
Baltimore vs Florida:
All we hear about is the great young Marlins, Baltimore a perrenial slug?
Toronto vs Atlanta:
Blue jays seem better this year, but are they in long run?
Boston vs Philadelphia:
As season wears on it seems Phillies the better ballclub?
Yankees vs Mets:
Mets may be a bit behing, debaatable, But seem to have edge in young future stars?
Barton 09-27-2006, 06:03 PM Dude, the talent on teams like the drays, jays, sox and orioles is FAR GREATER as a whole unit than those of the phillies, nationals (lol), atlanta (lol again).
Its not even close. The NL has shown all you need is 1 very good pitcher (not even great, just very good) and 4 jags and you'll compete. Case in point is the Cardinals, Padres, Reds (they dont even have 1 very good starter, neither do the phillies)
The NL is a complete joke. I have never seen a league with such little talent in any sport.

break down team by team like i listed,, not easy to do without sounding like a complete 12 year old tool.. many people would put LOL's next to tampa and baltimore also..

You can do that for me. I know the talent on those NL east teams and it is barren.
The drays with Kazmir and that lineup of Crawford, Gomes, Cantu, Baldelli, Upton would easily compete in the JV league.
If you dont believe the NL is a complete joke, look at the interleague record. The AL completely raped and pillaged the NL.
Baltimore has Eric Bedard (Again, all you need is 1 very good pitcher in the NL to compete) and a very solid lineup with Hernandez, Tejada, Mora, Gibbons and Brian Roberts.
I've had this arguement. If you think I'm a 12 yr old tool I dont care, but at least I've brought facts to the table - the NL is a joke.
CrazyCarl40 09-27-2006, 06:11 PM When the Sox played the NL East this year and were fully healthy, please tell me their record SJ. And then take a good hard look and tell me that the AL and NL East are even in the same hemisphere.

again, lack of team by team shows you have no faith in argument,, just cant be done,,not much difference

again, for the reading impaired, ,break down team by team as they match up in standings,,
cant be done without saying they are pretty equeal,,
rest of AL is better for sure, ,AL-East is weak link

Why dont you prove it?
You have brought zero to this discussion. Lets see you back it up. I already did!
(waits for his response which spins it around and ticktickticks himself)
I did this team by team BS. I have other sh#t to do today than sit here and dissect 6 teams I dont give a sh#t about. I already summed up the talent on the 6 teams and told ya the NL got their asses kicked by the AL, what more do you want.
Lets see you back it up.

The AL west is the weakest division
Gainzo 09-27-2006, 08:00 PM SJ: What exactly are you looking for?
Apart from Mets/Yanks I would take the AL East teams in a 7 game series over the NL East teams.
You can't really compare the AL against the NL as AL teams face much better teams within the AL than the NL teams do.
There are 4 teams in the AL with 90+ wins. 1 in the NL.
The 2nd place team in the AL Central would have the best record in the NL.
All of the AL Division leaders have won at least 90 games. In the NL only the Mets have won more than 90 games.
There are 7 AL teams with better records than the NL Central leading Cards.
Sharrow 09-28-2006, 01:16 AM Well, looking at just the interleague records, team by team, this season:
Mets vs Yankees - even
Phillies vs Red Sox - Red Sox
Braves vs Blue Jays - Blue Jays
Marlins vs Orioles - Marlins
Nationals vs D-Rays - Nationals
So thats pretty even. 2-2-1.
Team by team, right now:
Tampa Bay vs Washington:
Washington has been better and probably will be next year if they can keep Soriano. But right now, after Nick Johnson broke his leg, TB might be better.
Baltimore vs Florida:
Hands down, Florida is better. If you don't think so, well, you're an idiot.
Toronto vs Atlanta:
The Blue Jays are better right now. They probably will be to begin next year too.
Boston vs Philadelphia:
Right now, the Phillies are better. Anyone who says the Phillies (Howard, Utley, Burrell, Rollins, Hamels, Myers, etc) don't have talent, is also an idiot. Next year after Boston gets healthy and spends some $$$, they will be better.
Yankees vs Mets:
Tough to say, Craig Wilson vs Oliver Perez. Who ya gonna pick? Is Craig going to hit a homer or strike out, is Olly going to pitch a shutout or allow 6 runs in the first inning? I see they both shaved. Right now, I'd give the edge to the yankees due to having a better rotation.
I don't know though, nobody can match the yankees pocketbook. And they don't have too many holes to fill this offseason now that they have damon, abreu, cano, and wang. If they ditch A-Rod, they'll have to fill 3B, but other than that they need some help in the bullpen and a starting pitcher or two. That probably won't be too hard to find. The Mets will probably need a 2B (any interest in Jose Castillo, btw?), a LF, some relievers, and up to 3 starting pitchers.
Now, about this AL being so much better than the NL, I did some math on it.
AL Interleague Record at home: 86-40
AL Interleague Record away: 68-58
That proves that the AL is better on average than the NL this year. +10 games in NL parks without a DH.
So the AL home record vs NL teams = AL home record vs AL teams + advantage due to having a DH + However much better the AL is than the NL.
.6825 = .5446 + DH + AL advantage.
The difference between NL records at home vs the NL and NL records at home vs the AL is about 8.96% worse vs the AL. The difference between AL records on the road vs the AL and AL records on the road vs the NL is about 8.42% worse vs the AL. An average of 8.69%
So we'll say that the AL is 8.69% better than the NL, or .0869.
.6825 = .5446 + DH + .0869
DH = .6825 - .5446 - .0869
Based on that, the DH advantage is about 5.1% when the NL plays in AL parks.
That means that the AL is about 8.69% better than the NL, generally. And having a real DH when they play the NL at home gives them about a 5.1% advantage.
Thats probably all not completely correct, if you took out the best and worst of each league, then it would probably be more accurate. Of course, on average, AL teams do spend almost 12 million more per team than those of the NL. So you have to figure that there's going to be some advantage. ;)

Great post Sharrow,,
Barton could learn from you about how to respond to original post
SouthernJet 10-10-2006, 05:37 PM bump
Barton 10-10-2006, 06:03 PM bump
Why'd you bump this?
The Mets beating the dodgers and the Yankees losing to the Tigers has nothing to do with this arguement FYI.
