ESPNews reports the Boston Red Sox have agreed to an undisclosed contract with SS Julio Lugo (Dodgers).
Big day for the sox.

Depends on who you ask. 106 million combines doesn't buy you much anymore. Let it be said I am not in agreeance with either of these signings.

$106 mil?
Where did you get that miniscule figure?
Between Drew, Lugo, and Dice-K, AND NOW BEING FORCED TO KEEP MANNY...$106 million is bargain basement level!
Smurf 12-05-2006, 11:37 PM LOL.
We know,We know....Lugo > Jeter
AirForceJetFan 12-06-2006, 12:26 AM Lugo is a very good signing IMO. Drew...well we all know his deal. He's driven in 100 runs one time in his career and has never played 150 games. If he stays healthy he's a great move, if he turns out to be J.D. Drew, he'll play enough games to post solid numbers but wont have the impact you'd like out of a guy making that much money. He's nowhere near as fast as he used to be because of all the inuries and Sox fans should be appalled at Boras' comment that Drew will play a "Dwight Evans type of right field". Evans was incredible IMO, Drew is good.
madmike1 12-06-2006, 12:50 AM 36 million for a bad defensive SS who's never had a OPS over .770 LMAO. What a HOIRRIBLE signing.

Wow....Julio Lugo. Total brain fart on my part. I was thinking they had gotten a much younger/more potential Jorge Cantu (I guess watching some D' Rays games when I lived had me thinking of the wrong guy). Lugo is not the player I thought he was (literally). That's a lot of money for a .270 hitter who averages a HR every 50 ABs. He'll steal a few bases for the Sox but this move by Theo is honestly a bit puzzling. If I'm not mistaken, Lugo is the guy who was cut by the Astros a few years ago for beating the crap out of his wife/girlfriend. I'm pretty sure that was him.
AirForceJetFan 12-06-2006, 01:12 AM Yep
HOUSTON -- Houston Astros shortstop Julio Lugo was demoted (and later released) Thursday, hours after he was arrested and charged with hitting his wife in the face and slamming her head on a car hood.

Yeah thats him. Cantu is a promising young guy. Basically the opposite of Lugo...
Also Can someone please explain to me how Jose Valentin who was a better player then Lugo last year (Better OPS, More HR, More RBI, Better OPS+ by a good deal) is worth $3.8 million over 1 year and Lugo is worth 36 million over 4 years?
Smurf 12-06-2006, 01:19 AM I love when the sox waste money!

Drew is 5/70
Lugo is 4/36
I'm no math wizard but yesterday they spent 106 million. And they haven't spent a dime to Matsuzaka yet. Except maybe on some sushi over dinner.

Oh, I am sorry, I didnt know you were being witty and sarcastic by pointing out " Wow, look how much Henry Owners Grp. spends in 1 day...not even fat george does that, Hehehe!!!"
Good one.
But youre original witty post would have been even more shocking, ironic, and funny if you had included Manny's salary as well as Dice-K's because it they are looking very steinbrenner-ish here!
Um, now that I think about it, there are many many teams this offseason that are spending money on sucky players like they are printing money in their clubhouses. Does that make your funny post less funny?
haggis 12-06-2006, 09:16 AM Damn I wish we had signed Cabbie after the '04 season.
This is an okay signing: decent SS getting market cash.
Lugo was terible after getting traded to the Dodgers- if he gets back to Tampa Bay form not a bad move by Bosox.

Bingo.
He was a solid player in TB, and was platooning in LA.
PS. His wife dropped the charges, and admitted that she lied.

You haven'y seen anything yet. Sure, 50 million for Matthews, and 3 years, 34 million for Padilla are bad contracts. But watch when Lilly gets his 36 - 44 million, or Meche gets the same, or Schmidt gets 3 or 4 years at 14 million per, or Zito gets 5-7 years, at 15 million+ per.
Then you will see the stupidity of it all.
This off-season dwarfs the stupidity of 5 years ago, when teams also went nuts.

Why let the facts get in the way of a good Sox player bashing! ;)

under 770 OPS every year and below avg D at SS does not make a "solid player."
