The Gil Meche (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?statsId=6266) sweepstakes are over, and the Kansas City Royals (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/clubhouse?team=kan) are the winners.

ESPN's Steve Phillips reported Thursday that the Royals and Meche have agreed to terms on a 5-year deal, pending a physical. Financial details were not immediately available. Earlier Thuesday, it was reported that Royals and Meche were working towards a four-year, $45 million deal.


Meche, a six-year veteran, has a career record of 55-44 and a 4.65 earned-run average, all with the Seattle Mariners (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/clubhouse?team=sea). He was 11-8 for the Mariners last season with a 4.48 ERA. The Toronto Blue Jays (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/clubhouse?team=tor) and Chicago Cubs (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/clubhouse?team=chn) also were in the running for Meche.

Sorry, but this is not the worst signing this winter.

Matthews - 5/50 million
Pierrie - 5/45 million
Lilly - 4/40 million
Drew - 5/70 million
Lee - 6/100 million

All these are worse, IMO. In this sequence. But if Zito gets the rumored 6/102 million from Texas, then he cracks the top 3 here.
