I said it over and over again that the Red Sox had ALL the leverage in this deal, and that they were actually very shrewd in their bid and resulting negotiations.

Boras had NOTHING that he could use as a bargaining point, and an agent in this deal was almost useless.

Now, it has yet to be written if this will be a good deal in the long term of things.

I find it a little bit funny that Yankee fans say "Wow, look at all the money the Red Sox spent on this player". But, it was some of these same fans that were saying that the Red Sox would have to pony up between 12-16 mill per year ON TOP of what they bid for negotiating rights.

The Red Sox were shrewd and played this exactly right if they they are getting the pitcher they obviously feel he is. Whether that works out has yet to be known.

Great job by the Sox FO, terrible job by Boras. Could've had the kid go back to japan for one season, get re-posted and make double the money. Boras got taken to the cleaners by Theo.

That was the thing. The KID really wanted to play in the US. His team did not want him back.

There was only one logical conclusion to this whole situation. The others just did not make sense. The need for Boras in this was none.

So they paid 51.11 million for the rights to him. And 52 million for him. Over 6 years. That is over 17 million per year. WOW.

Him being a 20 game winner is really the only option. 100 million to a pitcher? Interesting. They should have asked the Dodger what they thought about that.

What makes this even better is that they over bid so much on him. Those closed bids will get you every time. Time will tell but unless he is an immediate 20 game winner -- this could really backfire.

Switching leagues (NL to AL) sometimes poses risks. Switching countries and playing with a different baseball? Anyone who told you they knew what this guy was going to do would be lying.

I am not saying he is not going to be good. He might be. But let's think about this logically. This is a big risk. And this is the Red Sox. How has that worked out historically speaking?

I think he will be good. And I think the Red Sox did cut an excellent deal to get him at the price they did, even if he make sthe incentives and gets 10 million per.

But the total cost for D. Mat is between 17.17 and 18.5 million per. He better be a Cy Young candidate, stats - wise, every year of this deal to be worth his price. If he is anothe Irabu (I doubt it) then the Bosox are in deep trouble for a while.

And regarding the post about teh need for an agent.............

Since he did not get a shorter term deal, with FA rights after 3-4 years, ah la Hideki Matsui, I also question what "value-added" did Boras bring here.

The Seibu Lions Did not want him back. He had no choice but to sign with Boston. I'm sure someone has mentioned it here already, but the posting fee was 3 times the payroll of the Seibu Lions last year. Had D-Mat went back, he would have probably gotten smacked around by his own people.
