Sharrow 12-21-2006, 10:57 PM I'd put Willie Stargell in LF and Roberto Clemente in RF over Vlad and Manny.
stormshadow19 12-21-2006, 11:07 PM No Bob Gibson?
#27TheDominator 12-22-2006, 04:01 AM You link Mays and Mantle together? Dear lord don't let my father see this. You will get a 412 page dissertation on how Mantle was considerably better, made his teammates better, won despite having worse teammates, had incomparable power, speed, hit for higher average, was a better fielder, etc., etc. Thankfully, the first Yankee cf I remember is Murcer.

peak wise, Mickey was better
but Mays had more career value
and I'm pretty sure Mays was a better fielder from what I've been told by old people who I discuss baseball with.
i can't really choose
mbn007 12-22-2006, 08:49 AM There is no correct way to list the best ever by position. No matter who you list, someone can come up with an argument for dozens of others, and all will have some merit, at least!
BTW - Mays was better then Mickey. He had more speed, covered more ground in teh OF, and had a better arm. Mickey may have ended up with better stats if he was not hurt so often.

MBN, that's a good observation. I think Mantle could have been as good as Mays, but through injuries and the way the team played (i.e., no stolen bases on the Yankees of the 50's), Mays ended up being the better of the two. But not by much.
I think the list is a pretty good compilation of the greatest players. The only things I would change is that I would have to find a place for Roberto Clemente in there (the best RF I've ever seen) and I would replace Pedro with either Tom Seaver or Gibson.
AirForceJetFan 12-22-2006, 09:46 AM One could argue for eons about the best player at any one position. Let alone every position in the game. I think we can all agree that there are a lot of guys that make the list, but very few clear cut #1s outside of Ruth.
Scott Dierking 12-22-2006, 01:20 PM Wade Boggs as the best 3rd baseman of all time?
Wow, I have heard it all
Only minor quibble-Koufax and Gibson deserve consideration over Paige and Pedro, and Schmidt is better than Boggs. Koufax pitched in a dominant fashion with his arm about to fall off. Pedro would've shut it down long before he got to that point. No knock on Piage, but Gibson in his era was as good as everyone except Koufax. Also kinda think Seaver deserves a look over those 2, though in the postseason he wasn't dominant.Mays should be top CF, but the image of him falling down in the '73 series probably hurt him.

Mantle was faster than Mays.

Mike Schmidt? Heck, George Brett was better than Wade Boggs. It pains me to say it, but so is Chipper Jones.
Wade Boggs does not deserve top 5, 3rd baseman.

Wow, I have heard it all
he was an OBP machine and hit .328 for his career, won 5 batting titles and 6 on-base titles
plus he lead the league in most times on base from 1983-1990
thats alot

Like I said before, you can make an argument for any of a dozen or more guys at every position, except RF, IMO.
