I saw this rumor last week but I have a very hard time believing that ANYBODY would take RJ off the Yankees hands unless they pick up about 85% of his contract given his ineffectiveness and injuries.

WOW...looks like Arizona might actually want this guy. Pull the trigger Cash, I don't care what they're offering...RJ can't handle New York. If they are offering a major leaguer I would think it would be one of their catchers. They have a couple of solid young guys behind the dish.

FROM ESPN

In the past week the Arizona Diamondbacks have offered a package of players to the New York Yankees in exchange for Randy Johnson, a baseball official said.

In need of starting pitching -- and a marquee name that will draw more fans -- the Diamondbacks have offered a package of at least three players, including a major-leaguer. They would also want a 72-hour window to negotiate an extension with Johnson, who is owed $16 million in the final year of his contract. The Yankees, according to the official, don't want to pick up any of Johnson's salary.

Johnson, 43, spent six seasons with Arizona and won four Cy Young Awards before being traded to New York in January 2005. At the time, Arizona was looking to shed payroll and bring in more youth.

Johnson had a full no-trade clause back then, as he does now. And it's believed that if the Yankees were to move him, Johnson would prefer to be closer to his Arizona home.

According to Johnson's agent, Alan Nero, the left-hander has not requested a trade.

"Randy would listen if the Yankees brought something to him," Nero said. "But that has not happened. I don't know what they're doing. It's still speculation as far as we're concerned."

The official said the San Diego Padres are also involved in trade discussions. It's believed that right-handed reliever Scott Linebrink could be the centerpiece of a deal.

If he returns to Arizona, Johnson, with 280 career wins, could get No. 300 as a Diamondback. If he goes to San Diego, he'd join 333-game winner Greg Maddux in the rotation. That is, if he stays healthy. Johnson had back surgery this offseason and it's unknown whether he'll be ready for Opening Day.

Arizona would be out of their friggin minds if they made a deal for RJ. The dude is washed up. Johnson couldn't attract prostitute much less new fans to Arizona.

Agreed. I'm shocked as well. This is now three reports I've read on it though with his agents even saying they've been contacted, but no talks far along enough for them to get involved so clearly it is being discussed at the very least.

maybe they should trade him to a minor league Kentucky team where he'd fit in?

Randy will be better in the NL. Its the "Senior" circuit, because crusty old pitchers faire much better in that league.

hahaha

you can't say that fairly, we've never seen Maddux pitch in the AL before to judge

Clemens though, I don't know if he'd do that good in the AL in '06

Good.

Getting rid of his old and bloated salary ass would be the best thing we could possibly do between now and April.

If Arizona is stupid enough to take Johnson back Cashman deserves exec of the year regardless of where the Yanks finish.

If these rumors are true (WFAN and ESPN radio were all over these yesterday) the Yankees need to do this, unless they are paying his salary for 2007.

Plain and simple as that. True, he pitched 200 innings or more the past 2 seasons, but he is not close to the Arizona version of Randy. He perhaps really does need the NL.

Agreed. Especially if they have a chance to get a decent prospect that's currently on the D' Backs roster. They have some talented young catchers and to be honest I'd deal RJ for Hammock straight up just do dump his salary and get him off of this team.

The guy I really want is Connor Jackson, but he probably won't be dealt. He and S. Drew are the top 2 prospects there.

They have a couple of young catchers, and pitchers also. Hope we get something decent back, without paying for the contract in 2007.

Yanks' bottom line should be

--If you want us to pick up a big chunk of his contract, we get a legit prospect back....no bottom feeding minor leaguers

--If we're not picking up more than a couple million, we'll take a little less talent wise to get the $16 million dollar bust of a contract off the books

I would agree with this, but I cant see this deal being done without the Yanks picking up some of the Salary, anything more than 2 million on their end, they might as well keep him.

Rumor as per Jon Heyman of SI is that if the Unit trade goes through, Yanks have a top flight offer on the table to Zito immediately; makes a world of sense.

ESPN this morning is expecting them to go after Zito and Clemens. For the love of God they should have just posted $100 Mil for the Japanese guy.

Big deal for Big Unit?
Dec 28 - According to the East Valley Tribune, the Yankees want a package of three young pitchers from the Diamondbacks for Randy Johnson.
The Yankees reportedly have expressed interest in Brandon Medders, but Arizona would rather substitute Luis Vizcaino for the right-handed setup man.

The Giants and San Diego and San Francisco are also interested in Johnson.

The Diamondbacks, according to The Arizona Republic, appear willing to extend a two-year contract to Johnson (he will earn $16 in '07) to stay within their budget
