View Full Version : Further proof that Boston MAY not be a baseball town.
It is my firm belief that this "Boston is a baseball town" stuff is completely media driven. Here's a tidbit that serves my opinion well:
Pats rev up RMV
And speaking of the Pats, the Is-This-A-Baseball-Town-Or-A-Football-Town Debate will heat up today with the news that the New England Patriots special license plate broke the Registry of Motor Vehicles' record with the biggest launch ever.
``It's blown everything else that we've ever done out of the water,'' said Registry spokesgal Amie O'Hearn. ``None of our other special plate groups have done anything else like this.''
One day after the new plate was unveiled, 500 had been ordered, O'Hearn said. That's in addition to the 3,000 that had been previously reserved.
At that rate, she said, the Pats plate should easily exceed the 19,000 special Red Sox plates currently in circulation.
``They introduced the Sox plate about a year ago,'' she said. ``There was a big spike after they won the World Series, but the high would be about 60 orders per day.''
The plates, available online through the Registry, feature the Pats logo above Roman numerals representing each of the team's three Super Bowl victories.
Proceeds from the sale of the $40 plates will benefit the Patriots Charitable Foundation.
haggis 03-10-2005, 10:47 AM I got my Red Sox one the first week they came out 2 years ago. Great idea by the Mass DMV. Cool plates and the extra cash you spend for it goes to charity. I'll be renewing mine later this year.
PFSIKH 03-10-2005, 10:50 AM It still is a baseball town but the Sox share of it has dwindled in the past few years.
If this roids things total ever blows up in baseball's face, they could lose even more of a share.

No offense, but I live in Boston and see people wearing their caps - more Pats than Sox - and that is the honest to God truth.
I signed-up for my PATRIOTS plate - can't wait to get it.
Smizzy - there is a cool hat that some folks are wearing. It has the year 2004 printed on it....the words world champions underneath it and a Pats logo on one side and a Sox logo on the other. I've got to get me one!!!!

The company that makes them is in Holyoke. No joke. I know the guy who makes them.
The Pats plate looks pretty good. I still think the Sox are the bigger draw in Boston. The SuperBowl is just over so that is why there are so many Pats lids around. As soon as April kicks in I think the switch over to the Sox caps will be seen.
SJ - I've been looking for it and can't find them. They are sold out as soon as they are put on display. Tell him to make MANY MORE!......please :D
Gainzo 03-10-2005, 11:20 AM I wonder how the Bruins plate is selling! They keep running that stupid commercial with Ray Bourque everyday.
While we are on the topic of cars in Massachusetts let me tell you a little story that happened to me last night:
I'm driving home from work (Woburn to Boston) and the traffic absolutely sucks. Storrow Dr westbound and Beacon St were parking lots, so after getting through that mess I'm cruisin up Clarendon St and stop at a red light.
When the light turns green I continue on my way and all of a sudden I see blue lights behind me. I pull over and a Boston Cop pulls up next to me.
I roll down my window and he says: "Turn off your fog-lights, they are illegal in this State." WTF?
I have a Subaru Outback and I didn't even realize they were on but that is beyond the point. Has anyone ever heard about fog lights being illegal? Just about every SUV & Truck has them.
I searched online today and couldn't find anything saying I couldn't use them.
Anyone know what this cop was talking about?
????? I think he was "cruising" you - get it??? Cruising?
This would be the first I've heard about fog lights being illegal. I'd call the State Police and verify.....just out curiosity. Sounds ridiculous.
haggis 03-10-2005, 11:36 AM I have heard of it. But i ahven't heard about any cop stupid enough to pull anyone over for it.
Gainzo 03-10-2005, 11:42 AM It's not like my fog lights are mounted on the top of my car like a rednecks pickup. They are below my headlights about 8 inches off the ground.
I'm thinking there is some old law that is never enforced that bans fog light use unless the weather warrants them. Oh well no big deal I was just curious.

I have no problem with foglights. I have a problem with arseholes who refuse to put headlights on until it is pitch black out but have their sidelights on instead. Every car should have daytime lights, IMO.
Back in the Larry Bird days it was a Basketball city.

Believe it or not the Bruins were just as big back then. I was more of a B's fan back then than a Celtics fan.

Garb, I did say it was still a baseball town.
I am only saying that the Patriots have more of a share of the popularity. I am not saying it is like 51% to 49% either.
The Sox are still first in the hearts of most New Englanders, but there is a growing percent of people, like me for instance, that have always enjoyed football more so then baseball.
It also helps with the Patriots run since 1993 and the other three teams lack of success (short of the Sox' a few months ago) to help build up a fan base.
Blackout™ 03-10-2005, 02:29 PM New York used to be known as a basketball town, now its 100% baseball
as time changes, **** changes
Jet/BosoxFan 03-10-2005, 10:17 PM you people arguing that the Boston fanbase is even remotely centered around anything other than the Red Sox are way off.
I dont know a single Bostonian (legit Bostonian) that wouldnt trade all 3 Pats super bowls for another world series ring.
...And we just won one! Granted, the Pats moved past the Cs and Bs, but that is due in large part to those 2 teams being in perrenial nosedives.
Boston is not only a baseball town...it is THEE baseball town

Thank god because the Knicks Suck
Jetsfan80 03-10-2005, 10:25 PM Basically, Boston is in a non-stop pants-creaming-fest over all their sports right now. Don't worry, everything will balance out eventually.

New York isnt 100% anything...Whether youre a Yankee homer who memorized encyclopedias full of trivial Yankee stats like Maxman or a bandwagon-hopping frontrunning phoney Yank-me fan like JonEJinx...or whether youre a masochistic troglodyte who rolls out to watch the Mets kick the ball around the infield for 9 innings, youre still outnumbered by artsy-fartsy scum in NYC who just dont give a **** about baseball save for the fact that it ties up traffic
shawn306 03-11-2005, 07:39 AM The Pats bigger than the Sox !?!
To borrow a quote for Jets/Bosox
BWAHAHAHAHAHHA !!!!!!
Pats fans are some of the biggest bandwagon jumpers this side of Dallas.
Yes there are some very hardcore Pats fans out there who have been with the team forever. Wasn't this franchise at one time was very close to leaving Foxboro ?
Now the Sox on the other hand have been an institution to New England sports forever. Gluttons for punishment, and jealous of the the Pats success, and the success of the greatest franchise in all sports the New York Yankees, management finally fed them a bone and bought their fans a title.
You know what though. The Sox fans deserved it. They had been through enough. (Although some Yankees fans may disagree). Ye Olde Corporation and the Scapegoat Nation deserve at least a year of happiness.
That will end though sometime in late October.
PFSIKH 03-11-2005, 08:50 AM Shawn there is some truth in what you say and then again you miss the boat.
The Patriots like any team has their fair share of bandwagon jumpers. However, they also have a solid base of fans. This was a team that avaeraged 46K+ fans a game in a sub-standard HS stadium, that is a pain in the ass to get to and leave from for some horrible teams.
As for your baseball take, I agree with everything said, my only point is the younger generations that have experienced only 1993 to present might be more of a Patriots' fan then a baseball fan. It is also more likely that as the Celtics and Bruins have muddled through mediocrisy, the Patriots have pulled people from them to.

Your gonna get that wherever you. People love a winner. The best way to describe it is right here in New York. You have 25% hard core Yankee fans. 25% percent are hard core Mets fans. The other 50% will root for whoever is winning at the time.
If the Pats went in 2005 I think alot of fans would be jumping off the bandwagon so fast it would be make your head spin. Everyone loves a winner.
Sox fans on the other hand have been hardcore thru and thru. It goes from generation to generation to generation. That is what I given them credit for and that is why Boston (in my eyes) will always be a baseball town.
Shawn - all I can say is that you are dead wrong, ....pompus NY fans!
The Pats fan base is pretty darn strong. Sure there are some bandwganon jumpers - every team has 'em - especially with the advent of Corp seat and luxury boxes. Are you telling me that ALL Jets fans are true blue (ooops, green)? Please....I think you need to thank Mr. Bill Parcells for filling-up the Jets bandwagon
Yes, the Sox have a strong fan base - older (the bandwagoners tend to be young college hooligans  ) and the belief that they rule Boston is COMPLETELY media driven, in my opinion.

Put it this way, I would not in a 86 years trade any of the Pats SB victories for another Sox WS Championship - and I am defintely a true, blue Bostonian.....and an avid Boston Sports Fan. Don't speak for an entire region, B - I respresent the SILENT Majority - the one that does not have a Newspaper (who is part owner - cough, cough - Boston Globe) in it's back pocket.

Jets fans true blue (uh Green ?) Nope. I have sat in that stadium many times with 40,000 fans disguised as empty seats. I'm sure you sat in Foxboro with at least that many. I'm not questioning people like you of PFSIKH. There will ALAWAYS be that hard core portion.
The fact is though when a team has the success that the Pats have had the past 10-12 years (And yes you should also be sending a VERY BIG thank you note to Parcells.) Alot of people are going to jump on the bandwagon. That is the nature of the beast (unless you live in Philadelphia where it is nothing but the Eagles).
Judgemental Boston Tools
shawn306 03-11-2005, 11:07 AM New York is not a football town. New York always has been and always will be a baseball town first.
Football towns are places like Philly. Even with the Phillies, Sixers and Flyers that is all they talk about 24x7. I pretty much live dead in the middle of New York and Philly and listen to the Philly sports stations alot and even now they are talking Eagles football. Nobody down there cares about the Phils or Sixers and with the Flyers basically out of buisness right now there is nothing to talk about except for the Eagles. Why ? The Phillies have the makings of a good team this year. The Sixers have Iverson.
It is a football town.
All winter in New York the talk wasn't about the Jets or Giants 24x7. It was about the Yankees collapse, what they are going to do next year, what the Mets have done with Pedro and Beltran. Football had its moments. Mostly negative if you listen to Mike and the Mad Dog  but that is New York. Baseball first.
When the Boston media starts making the Pats front page headlines in May then I will believe that Boston is a football town.
