New York Jets vs. Washington Redskins Preview

By Tyson Rauch

On Friday night the New York Jets take on the Washington Redskins at the new Meadowlands stadium (7pm EST). This is the third game of the preseason which usually serves as a dress rehearsal for the regular season opener, with the starters playing at least 3 quarters of the game. Here are some players and situations to keep an eye on during the game.

1) No McNabb- Earlier this week the Redskins announced that their starting quarterback Donovan McNabb will not play in this game, which hurts the Jets in terms of defensive preparation. Rex Grossman is slated to start for Washington, a player the Jets defense should be able to rattle.

2) Play of Mark Sanchez- Lost in all of the hype of Hard Knocks and the Darrelle Revis holdout is the fact that Mark Sanchez has been somewhat inconsistent in camp. The excuses have been plentiful from getting rid of the rust, to working on chemistry, to the lack of game planning. On Friday night Sanchez has to put together some drives and show that he can move the chains with this offense.

3) Offensive line play- The Jets are trying to incorporate a new starter at the left guard position to replace Alan Faneca. It appears that Matt Slauson has the edge to be the starter, but rookie Vlad Ducasse reportedly still has a shot. Regardless of whom is named the starter, the offensive line as a whole has to show that they can dominate the line of scrimmage. Whether it is in pass protection or establishing the run game, it is time to start showing some cohesiveness.

4) Secondary play- The Darrelle Revis contract holdout continues therefore the Jets need to continue developing their contingency plans in the secondary. The spotlight will be on players like Dwight Lowery, Drew Coleman, and Kyle Wilson who will be asked to take on bigger roles.

5) Vernon Gholston- VG showed some signs of life last week for probably the first time in his Jets career. Can Vernon continue his progress and become a threat in this defense?

6) Performance of the “bubble” players- It is put up or shut up time for several players on the Jets as the first player cutdown is on Tuesday. Most of the players need to shine on special teams in order to make the roster, so it will be interesting to see who lays it on the line. Some players to keep an eye on: Danny Woodhead, David Clowney, Chauncey Washington, and Larry Taylor.

Yes he needs to pull it together.

I find it amusing that we expect a 2nd year qb to play like Montana. The guy plays great in the playoffs, plays good in the first pre season game and the entire offense plays bad last week and now we are back to Mark sucks, come on man.

If you think he will become some hall of fame player this year, get over it. He should be better than last year, but judging him off the pre season is funny. Lets wait and see what happens this year. Oh yeah, it might help the guy if 1. he gets better protection and 2. one of these glorified wr's can get open. If you still have the game form last week, watch it again if you can and tell me who exactly was open??

I love that because he's our guy, he's been 'inconsistent'. So far as I can tell, he's just sucked.

He just sucked against Carolina, no doubt.

Against the jints he had a terrible throw to start the game, but was 13/16 for 119 yards and a TD the rest of the way. I think most of us would take that kind of performance on a weekly basis this season. Inconsistent is a fair assessment.

He needs to have a solid game tonight.

Jets-Redskins: Pre-game breakdown

August, 27, 2010 Aug 2711:37AM ETEmail Print Comments By Rich CiminiThis is Day 27 of the Darrelle Revis holdout -- and the most important day in the New York Jets' preseason. They face the Washington Redskins Friday night at TNMS, the third game. Because the starters will play about three quarters, this is the closest thing to the real thing.

What to watch:

• The Big O or the Big Oh-No? After last week's no-show, the Mark Sanchez-led offense will be under the spotlight. So far, the pre-season numbers aren't good -- nine possessions, only one TD. Another stinker isn't going to prompt Rex Ryan to break out the color codes again, but you'd like to see some improvement, especially in the passing game -- specifically, screens and play action. You might notice that bulky brace on Sanchez' left knee; let's call it the Slauson brace because ...

• Slauson vs. Ducasse. This is Round 3 in the left-guard battle. Matt Slauson, still the frontrunner and the odds-on favorite to be the opening-night starter, will make his third straight start. He could've locked up the job last week, but he was schooled in pass protection on one play and nearly let a Panthers pass rusher crash into Sanchez' knee. Not happy about that, Rex Ryan will give rookie Vladimir Ducasse some work with the first unit, a late audition.

• Holmes, Sweet Holmes. Santonio Holmes, who has appeared in eight of the 49 plays by the first-team offense, should get more opportunities against the Skins. This is a delicate situation for the coaches: They want to give Holmes a chance to learn the offense and play with the starters, but they realize every first-team rep is robbing another player of a chance to work with the first group. Remember, Holmes has to serve a four-game suspension, starting Sept. 3. They want him to leave in great shape, but they can't do it as the expense of another player.

• D-Line, S.O.S. As soon as Ryan heard that Ropati Pitoitua (Achilles' tendon) was out for the season, he walked over to Rodrique Wright on the sideline in Carolina and challenged him to make the team. The already-thin defensive line needs somebody to step up, presumably either Wright or Matt Kroul. If not, they will pick up a veteran on the final cutdown.

• Washington slept here. RB Chauncey Washington was a virtual goner before last week, but he made a huge hit on special teams and ran for some tough yards, playing his way back on to the roster bubble. He also lost a fumble, but Ryan was so excited about Washington's performance that he gave him the game ball. He's battling Danny Woodhead and Jason Davis for a spot in the backfield.

• The Revis Factor. With QB Donovan McNabb (ankle) out of the lineup, the defense should have a big day against Rex Grossman. It might even dominate, which will cause some fans and media types to declare, "Who needs Revis?" Don't buy that nonsense. If the Jets can't shut down Grossman without Revis, they've got problems. This is not an accurate barometer of life without their stud corner.

• Is there a punt returner in the house? Little Larry Taylor is a Mike Westhoff favorite, but he isn't running away with the job. Rookie Joe McKnight busted a 67-yard return (lousy coverage by the Panthers), so he warrants another look. Rookie Kyle Wilson? He was supposed to be the guy, but he already has a lot on his plate, learning two positions in the secondary. If all else fails, there's always Jim Leonhard.

• Off the Mark. Backup QB Mark Brunell is on scholarship, which means he'll be the No. 2 no matter what, but a first down and a couple of completions would be nice, no?

That's a great term. Sanchez is going to have lots of bad days with some good to great ones mixed in. Its all part of the growing pains. The quicker we understand this the less stress it will cause. I trust our defense and running game to keep us in games when Mark is having his bad days.
