Jets start 10-1, but injuries to Klecko, Gastineau, Mehl and McElroy take their toll. The Jets lose their last 5 games to slide into the playoffs as a Wild Card.

Jets win the Wild Card game, 35-15 over the Chiefs.

But heartbreak in the Divisional Game as the Jets led the Cleveland Browns by 10 points with less than four minutes remaining. Gastineau's late hit on quarterback Bernie Kosar kept alive a Cleveland scoring drive, and the Browns levelled it with a field goal with 7 seconds to go. The Jets lost in the second quarter of overtime.
