Background and college

Born January 31, 1971 in Los Angeles, Conway attended Hawthorne High School in Hawthorne, California and was a football and a track star. He won All-America honors as a senior quarterback. Even though he was an All-American QB, he was more known for his exploits on the track. He qualified for California State Championships as a sophomore, junior and senior and at the end of his senior year he won the state championship in the 100m. He also anchored, at that time, the California state record setting 4 x 100 m relay team. Conway played at El Camino Junior College in Torrance, California, before going to USC.

NFL Career

Before the Jets

Conway was a a first round 1993 NFL Draft choice for the Chicago Bears in 1993, and moved to the San Diego Chargers in 2000. In 2003, Conway signed for the New York Jets.

As a Jet

After the Laveranues Coles - Washington Redskins fiasco, Conway was given a 3 year deal by the Jets. Then head coach, Herman Edwards enthused over Conway. At his press confernece, Edwards claimed that "I like tough guys, You can't be a sissy. You've got to be a tough guy to do the things we require our receivers to do. He'll do a lot of good things for us." Edwards continued to gush: "I have known Curtis for a while, he's a tough guy who can still run fast. He's caught over 500 balls, and that is a lot of passes. He plays every down, is not afraid to block or go across the middle. He's a very good football player we obviously are interested in."

Conway collapsing in shock after doing something useful
The truth was, he was past it. Dropped balls, more dropped balls, and more dropped balls summed up Conway's season.

His stats as a Jet were 46 receptions for 640 yards, with a mere 2 touchdowns. The Jets then traded for Justin McCareins and Conway was cut.

After the Jets

Amazingly enough his NFL career continued for one more season as he was signed by the obviously desperate San Francisco 49ers. Finally, no-one would have him within 50 miles of their team, so Conway retired.
