Background and college
Born May 1, 1974 in Ashtabula, Ohio, Hatchette initially attended Mercyhurst College in Erie, Pennsylvania. He attended Jefferson High School where he played quarterback and was also a member of the basketball team. His retired #5 jersey is on display in the school cafeteria, along with an article about when he was drafted. He is believed to be the only Jefferson Falcon in any sport to have his number retired. He then attended Langston University.
NFL Career
Before the Jets
Hatchette was taken by the Minnesota Vikings in the seventh round (235th overall) of the 1997 NFL Draft. He spent 4 seasons with the Vikings, scoring four touchdowns, but never amounting to anything more than the No.3 receiver.
As a Jet
Hatchette was supposed to be the prize of Terry Bradway's first free-agent class, signing a two-year deal for $1.6 million in 2001. Most in the league felt he was an undisciplined route runner from an unstructured offense but the team felt that Hatchette would provide a deep threat the offense desperately needed. He didn't. He appeared in eleven games, and managed the grand total of two receptions, and was released after the end of the season.
After the Jets
In 2003, Hatchette popped up in Jacksonville for one season, and also played one season in NFL Europe for the Amsterdam Admirals.
