Background and college
Born February 28, 1980 in Toms River, New Jersey, Barnes played high school football at Toms River High School North under coach Bob Nani, where he was recognized as second team all-state by The Star-Ledger during his senior year. Barnes went to college at Rutgers, but transferred to Hampton for the 2001 season.
NFL Career
Before the Jets
Barnes was signed as an undrafted free agent by the New York Giants in 2002, but was awarded off waivers to Tampa Bay in September of that year. He spent two years with the Buccs, during which time he blocked for future Jet running back Thomas Jones. In 2004 Barnes was traded to the Dallas Cowboys, but was released before the start of the 2005 season. 2 months later he signed for the Miami Dolphins as a free agent, where he spent the next 2 seasons.
As a Jet
Barnes signed with the Jets as a free agent in March 2007. He appeared in five games, starting three, but was released in November.
