  • 1969: Joe Namath announces his retirement as a result of the dispute over his ownership of Bachelors III, a bar in Manhattan.
  • 1977: Jim Kensil, executive director of the NFL since 1968 is named president and chief operating officer of the Jets. Leon Hess, who had served as acting president, became chairman of the board and chief executive officer for corporate matters.
