NEW YORK JETS TERMINATE THE CONTRACT OF VETERAN SAFETY REGGIE TONGUE

New York City – The New York Jets announced today the termination of safety Reggie Tongue’s contract. The announcement was made by Jets’ Executive Vice President and General Manager Terry Bradway.

Tongue, 32, signed as an unrestricted free agent with the Jets on March 22, 2004 after having played the previous four seasons (2000-2003) with the Seattle Seahawks. The veteran of nine NFL seasons originally was a second-round draft choice out of Oregon State by the Kansas City Chiefs in 1996 and played four seasons with the Chiefs before signing as an unrestricted free agent with the Seahawks.

In 2004, Tongue started all 16 regular season games with the Jets and both of the Club’s postseason contests. In the regular season, he recorded 68 tackles along with four passes defensed, one interception returned for 23 yards, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. Tongue recorded the longest interception return in Jets’ playoff history when he returned a Ben Roethlisberger pass 85-yards for a touchdown in the AFC Divisional Playoff game at Pittsburgh on January 15 at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh.
