New York Jets Week 1 Report Card

Ravens @ Jets – Monday Night Football

Quarterbacks: F

Mark Sanchez 10/21, 74, 0/0

Sanchez was putrid in the season opener and couldn’t convert a 3rd down if his life depended on it. A couple of drops by Greene and Cotchery hurt the sophmore QB, but when your completion percentage is below 50%,
you only have yourself to blame. While Sanchez didn’t turn the ball over, he still gets an F.

Running Backs: D

Tomlinson: 11/62
Greene: 5/18, 2 fumbles (1 lost)

Tomlinson saves Greene from earning the running back sqaud an “F” in the season opener. Barely. Greene turned in a pitiful performance, his feet are molasses and his hands are made of stone.

Wide Receivers/Tight Ends: F

What wide receivers? This team has wide receivers? Cotchery led the pack with only 18 yards and a drop.

Offensive Line: D

The offensive line struggled to protect Sanchez and didn’t get a good push off the line. Is it alright to miss Alan Faneca?

Defensive Line: A

Ellis: 0.5 sacks, 1 forced fumble
Pouha: 2 fumble recoveries

Despite being on the field nearly the entire game, the defensive line held Ray Rice to just 42 yards on 21 carries and provided good pressure on Flacco. That is no small feat. That’s not to mention the turnovers.

Linebackers: A-

Thomas: 1.5 sacks
Scott: 1 forced fumble

Linebackers had a tough time stopping the Ravens on 3rd down. Baltimore converted seemingly all of its 3rd downs. Still, the linebackers managed to limit Rice, and make plays in the backfield. An admirable performance.

Secondary: B-

There will be lots of criticism to go around for the sloppy penalties and poor coverage by Wilson and Cromartie, but the secondary (like the rest of the defense) was on the field all day. That stuff is bound to happen.
Cromartie made what should have been a game changing INT return.

Special Teams: B+

Nick Folk converted all his field goal attempts (including a 48 yarder), but nearly shanked a gimmee so he still scares the daylights out of me. Weatherford’s punting was respectable. Jim Leonhard showcased his athleticism on a 32 yard
punt return.

Coaching: D

The defense looks spectacular, but there is no excuse for a team surrendering 100+ penalty yards. Offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer prefers not to throw the ball to wide receivers, fearing that it might generate too much offense.
