Roster Spots On The Line In The Jets Preseason Finale

On Thursday night the New York Jets finish off the preseason with a match-up against the Philadelphia Eagles at Metlife Stadium ( 7 p.m.).   As with every preseason finale this game is all about fighting for roster spots as the team will have to cut approximately 25 players by Sunday.  The competition will start from the first snap as the starting units for both teams will not play in this game.  Lets take a look at some of the key position battles.

Offense

Offensive line- The injury to offensive lineman Robert Turner raised a lot of eyebrows as the Jets seem to be lacking depth on the line.  Vlad Ducasse is first in the rotation and guys like Matt Kroul, Robby Felix, Zane Taylor, Dennis Landolt, and Nevin McCaskill will be fighting to the make the team.  I would not be surprised to see the Jets sign a veteran free agent once the final roster cuts are completed throughout the league.

Wide receiver- There is a serious battle for the fifth wide receiver position with Patrick Turner leading the competition and players like Dan Depalma, Scotty McKnight, and Micheal Campbell trying to state their case.  Logan Payne was playing very well, but was injured against the Giants and his status is unknown at this point.

Defense

Linebackers- The Jets have several players trying to fill in the backup linebacker position, which will also include a role on the special teams coverage units as well.  Keep an eye on Aaron Maybin, Nick Bellore, Garrett McIntyre, Josh Mauga, and Brashton Satele.

Secondary- Gang Green has several young players trying to claim a spot in the Jets secondary behind Darrelle Revis and company.  As with the linebackers these players will also be asked to play a substantial role on special teams.  Guys to watch:  Emanuel Cook, Donald Strickland, Julian Posey

Enjoy the game everyone and have a great, safe holiday weekend!
