The Jets and Joe Douglas have freed up a bit of cap space for both 2021 and 2022 by re-working the contract of guard Alex Lewis.
According to NFL insider Field Yates, Lewis’ deal will pay him $3 million in salary this season instead of the previously agreed upon sum of $5.8 million. In addition to the reduced salary, Lewis will become a free agent after the 2022 season.
The competition at right guard figures to be intense as the Jets will have Lewis, incumbent starter Greg Van Roten, Cam Clark, free agent addition Dan Feeney and undrafted free agent Tristen Hoge who is a dark horse in the group.
If he doesn’t win the starting job, keeping Lewis around as a depth piece would make sense for Gang Green. Prior to coming to the Jets, Lewis has some experience at left tackle and could probably play center in a pinch if called upon to do so.
