Nate Hackett Stripped of Play Calling, Todd Downing up Next
New York Jets fans get what they’ve been calling for as failed play caller Nate Hackett earns himself a demotion with passing game coordinator Todd Downing taking over. The announcement was made today by head coach Jeff Ulbrich.
Quarterback Aaron Rodgers addressed the possibility of a change just yesterday and said he would be supportive of any move made by Ulbrich.
Downing’s history as a coordinator is short and has produced a wide range of results.
As a player caller for the Raiders back in 2017, Oakland ranked 23rd in the NFL in scoring 18.8 points per game but did choke down the stretch. as The Raiders averaged just 13 points per game over the final four weeks of the season as they dropped four and a row.
Todd Downing got another opportunity in 2021-2022 in Tennessee, finishing 15th and 28th respectively in scoring.
A conservative play caller who runs a west coast offense, Downing isn’t what one might refer to as a hot offensive coordinator candidate, but the only requirement of the job at the moment appears to be “he’s not Hackett”.
