Darren Mougey is shown during a press conference where he was introduced as the new general manager of the New York Jets, at the Atlantic Health Jets Training Center, Monday, January 27, 2025, in Florham Park.
The Jets have made a significant veteran addition in trading a seventh-round draft choice to the Miami Dolphins in exchange for the once elite Minkah Fitzpatrick.
The former Dolphin was a ball hawk from 2020-2022 when he intercepted 12 passes and had 29 passes defended, placing him among the top defenders in the NFL. Since that time however, from 2023-2025, we’ve seen those number plummet to 2 interceptions and 13 passes defended.
But even with the alarming drop in production, Fitzpatrick becomes the best safety on a roster with glaring holes in the secondary. He’ll step in and start from day 1 and hope to return to his previous form as Aaron Glenn takes over the Jets defensive play calling.
According to SNY, he’ll come on board with a brand new 3-year deal worth $40 million. Just how much of that money is guaranteed remains to be seen. Fitzpatrick could also become a valuable mentor for Malachi Moore, who flashed at times last season and will be looking to take a big step in year two.
