Shaking off what wasn’t such a great day during the previous session, Jets quarterback Geno Smith and the offense responded by completely dominating day three of practice. Of course this was a padless practice, but there were still many encouraging performances.
– Geno Smith didn’t have a single pass attempt hit the ground. As Shane Sullivan (@SullyJN_) said after practice, Smith would go a perfect 11-for-11 during full team drills and 4-for-4 during 7-on-7 periods.
– Wide receiver AD Mitchell continues to impress, making a leaping contested catch going up against Brandon Stephens. Mitchell also found the end zone on ball from Smith while Garrett Wilson had a pair of scores.
– Cornerback Qwan’tez Stiggers had an interception against rookie Cade Klubnik and linebacker Marcelino McCrary Ball had one of his own.
– Both kickers had their most impressive days with what was relatively extensive session, summarized here by JetNation’s own KRL who made this observation from the JetNation forums:
The kicker battle is going to be fun to watch. Jason Sanders went 7/8 while Cad York went 6/7 (the period ran out before he got his final kick). These are estimated distances because we were behind the kickers 37, 40, 50, 52, 55, 55, 60, 60. Sanders missed on a 60 yarder while York missed on a 55 yarder. York’s leg continues to look explosive with most of his kicks sailing over the net and over the stands where the fans were.
– It was also mentioned that rookie defensive tackle Darrell Jackson stood out in defending the run as did Harrison Phillips and David Onyemata. Jackson has a chance to be the best value pick in this year’s draft class and a dominant interior defender.
– A day after getting beaten badly by rookie edge rusher David Bailey, multiple reporters noted that both Armand Membou and Olu Fashanu bounced back nicely today.
– Second-year tight end Mason Taylor discussed the bevy of options Jets offensive coordinator Frank Reich will have in the pass game after adding Omar Cooper and Kenyon Sadiq. Adding that duo to Garrett Wilson, AD Mitchell, Taylor, Breece Hall and Braelon Allen could yield some serious results.
