Jets Training Camp Report (Saturday): Geno Smith Leads Sharp Offensive Performance

Geno Smith

The first week of New York Jets training camp wrapped up with another impressive practice as the offense continued to operate at a high level.  In this Jets Training Camp Report, KRL breaks down a strong outing by Geno Smith, the kicker competition, standout defensive performances, and more from Saturday’s session.

The following report is from KRL.

General Notes

  • First and only general public practice
  • Players in shorts & shells
  • Practice ran 2 hours
  • Promising trend after the first week of practice: the operation on both sides of the ball has been clean, crisp & professional. When personnel packages are subbed in, there are no players looking confused about which group they’re in or where to go. In fact, today is the first practice where I saw a penalty (defensive offsides) and a bad snap (Xavier Newman sailing one over Cade Klubnik’s head). I don’t know if it will lead to wins, but after some of the “cluster” practices I’ve seen in the past, it’s been refreshing.
  • Practice closed with extra conditioning today. The big guys (OLine/DLine) ran 50-yard gassers while everyone else ran 80.
  • The offense won the day in my opinion. In fact, I don’t think Geno Smith missed on a throw all day.

Special Team Notes

  • The kicker battle is going to be fun to watch. Jason Sanders went 7/8 while Cade York went 6/7 (the period ran out before he got his final kick). These are estimated distances because we were behind the kickers: 37, 40, 50, 52, 55, 55, 60, 60. Sanders missed on a 60-yarder while York missed on a 55-yarder. York’s leg continues to look explosive with most of his kicks sailing over the net and over the stands where the fans were.

Defense Notes

  • Darrell Jackson (DT) was one of the standouts today. Stuffing the running game up the middle all day and even bringing down Breece Hall with a one-arm “tackle.”
  • Veterans Harrison Phillips & David Onyemata continued their strong play by also shutting down the run.
  • David Bailey flashed in the running game as he showed excellent speed to the outside to stop Breece Hall.
  • The first two clean INTs of camp happened today, both were against Cade Klubnik. Qwantez Stiggers undercut his man and made a diving catch during 11-on-11. Marcelino McCray-Ball picked off Klubnik in 7-on-7.

Offense Notes

  • Garrett Wilson & Adonai Mitchell continue to impress as they make catch after catch.
  • Lots of variety in the passing game as the ball has been spread around. Mason Taylor, Kenyon Sadiq, Jeremy Ruckert and Jelani Woods had multiple catches. The screen game also continues to be consistent with Breece Hall, Braelon Allen and Isaiah Davis making catches.

QB Notes

  • Geno Smith was excellent. Like I said earlier, I don’t remember him throwing an incompletion. After watching Justin Fields last year, it’s been a pleasure watching efficient QB play.
  • Cade Klubnik threw two INTs as mentioned earlier, but other than that he was solid. Continuing to get completions and not looking like a rookie.

Standouts

  • Geno Smith
  • Garrett Wilson & Adonai Mitchell
  • Darrell Jackson
  • Harrison Phillips & David Onyemata
