The Jets have released safety DeAngelo Smith and linebacker Eddie Jones:
Smith signed as a free agent in April 2012 but was a long shot to make the 53-man roster since he hadn’t seen NFL action since 2009. The addition of safety Yeremiah Bell made Smith expandable as the Jets still have six safeties on their roster.
Jones saw action in one game as a Jet in 2011 but spent most of his time on the Jets and Rams practice squads. He was signed as a reserve/future free agent by the Jets in January 2012.
The New York Jets have signed LB Eddie Jones to a reserve/future contract. The announcement was made by General Manager Mike Tannenbaum.
Jones (6-3/260/Texas/Kilgore, TX) played in one game for the Jets, at New England (10/9/11) and spent time on both the Jets and Rams practice squads in 2011. In 50 games at the University of Texas, he started eight, and totaled 111 tackles and 13 sacks during his career. Jones was named All Big-12 honorable mention as a senior in 2010 after he notched 52 tackles, six sacks, 10 tackles for loss and one forced fumble.
