Cimini: NY Jets Set To Sign WR Coles

By Tyson Rauch

Rich Cimini of ESPN New York is reporting that the New York Jets are set to workout wide receiver Laveranues Coles on Friday, with the intention of signing him.  This would be Coles’ third stint with Gang Green as he played for the Jets from 2000-2002 and from 2005-2008.  On the surface this move seems somewhat surprising as the Jets appear to be loaded at the wide receiver position, but Coles would provide some insurance while Santonio Holmes serves his 4-game suspension.  In addition Laveranues would provide quarterback Mark Sanchez will another veteran receiving option, which is never a bad thing in the NFL.

There are some questions if the Jets go ahead and bring back Coles.  Who will be released from the roster in order to get LC in the fold as the Jets are already at the 80 man capacity? Danny Woodhead? And will Laveranues be willing to accept the backup role once Santonio comes back from his suspension? Coles has had some issues in the past when he is not getting the playing time/receptions he thinks he deserves, so this will be something to watch for.

All in all I think this would be a smart move by the Jets.  Maybe there were some legs to the T.O. to the Jets stories.
