NY Jets Sign Jarron Gilbert; Turner to Practice Squad

The New York Jets announced yesterday that they had waived WR Patrick Turner and signed Jarron Gilbert to the active roster.  Gilbert is a big bodied DT that seems to be a project with a ton of upside.  Keep an eye on him.  Many Jets fans know Turner as the player that collided with Jim Leonhard in practice and ended his season.  Turner is a big receiver that played well in his limited role for the Jets.

Here are the official announcements from the NY Jets:

December 16, 2010 – The New York Jets have signed DT Jarron Gilbert to the active roster from the practice squad. The announcement was made by General Manager Mike Tannenbaum.

Gilbert (DT/6-5/285/San Jose State/New Orleans, LA) was signed to the Jets active roster on October 27, 2010, and was inactive for three games before returning to the practice squad. He initially signed with the Jets practice squad on September 7.  Gilbert was drafted by the Chicago Bears in the third round, 68th overall, of the 2009 NFL Draft, and played in four games for the Bears, contributing on defense and special teams. He was waived on September 4.  A first-team All-American in 2008, Gilbert started 38 of his 48 career games at San Jose State and is the school’s all-time leader with 22.5 sacks.

December 17, 2010 – The New York Jets have signed WR Patrick Turner to the practice squad. The announcement was made by General Manager Mike Tannenbaum.

Turner (WR/6-5/220/Southern California/Nashville, TN) was waived on December 15, 2010, after playing five games with the Jets, where he saw time on special teams and recorded his first two NFL catches.  He originally joined the Jets on September 5, after being claimed off waivers from the Miami Dolphins. Turner entered the NFL as a third-round draft selection by Miami in the 2009 NFL Draft, where he saw action in two games as a rookie. He finished his collegiate career with 138 receptions for 1,752 yards and 17 touchdowns in four seasons at USC.
