Tannenbaum: Vick To Have Tebow-Like Role

Ex Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum chimed in on the Jets QB situation. He told NFL.com that Vick would have a Tebow-like role.

“I think the Vick signing makes sense on a couple other levels. One, Michael Vick‘s been to the highs and the lows in the NFL, and that wisdom and experience is important, that’s so valuable that he can pass along to Geno Smith,” Tannenbaum said on Inside Training Camp Live. “But there’s another part that I know is really important to Rex Ryan, which is Michael Vick‘s gonna play this year … he likes when the ball is in the hands of the quarterback that can make plays either throwing or running.

“And it may be five plays one game, it may be 25 another game,” Tannenbaum went on. “But he is going to put pressure on the defense by giving the ball to a quarterback that can make plays with his feet.”

When Tim Tebow was with the Jets, his stats were less than impressive.

32 carries \ 102 yards with a 3.2 YPC average. He attempted only a handful of passes on the season.

So it isn’t real clear what Tannenbaum means by a Tebow-like role.  A Brad Smith role on offense would probably be a better reference point.  As I stated back in March, Michael Vick was signed to be the backup QB. If the Jets end up using him in a wildcat package, that is a vote of confidence in Matt Simms or Tajh Boyd, whoever wins the 3rd QB spot. Because with Vick’s injury history, putting him on the field when Geno is healthy will increase the likelihood that he will get hurt and miss time.
