Albert Breer: Douglas Wanted OT in ’21 Draft, Overruled to Take Zach

Jet Nation

An updated version of this story was provided here following further clarification from Albert Breer.

A story receiving surprisingly little coverage in recent days regarding the New York Jets comes from NFL insider Albert Breer who said recently that Jets GM Joe Douglas may have been overruled in the 2021 draft when he took Zach Wilson with the second overall pick.

According to Breer, who was appearing on the Colin Cowherd show (right here), Douglas was interested in drafting an offensive lineman (presumably Detroit’s Penei Sewell) but was overruled by ownership.

It’s worth noting of course that as the draft approached that year, there were those who felt Wilson to the Jets would happen because ownership is friendly with his uncle, David Neeleman.  Neeleman is the owner of JetBlue airlines who has a sponsorship deal with Gang Green.

The quote from Breer has received so little press that if not for a post shared on our forums at JetNation.com, it may have slipped completely under the radar.
