New York Jets Trade Up and Select DE Tyler Baron in Round 5

Tyler Baron

The New York Jets weren’t done adding to their defensive line during Day 3 of the 2025 NFL Draft. New general manager Darren Mougey made an aggressive move, trading back into the fifth round to select defensive end Tyler Baron out of Louisville with the 173rd overall pick.

Adding more juice to the defensive front has been a big part of the Jets’ identity, and Baron fits the mold perfectly — athletic, powerful, and disruptive off the edge.

Tyler Baron began his college career at Tennessee before transferring to Louisville for his final season. He took his game to another level with the Cardinals, setting career highs across the board and showing the ability to get after quarterbacks while being stout against the run.

Even with a rotation that already includes Jermaine Johnson and Will McDonald IV, you can never have enough pass rushers. Look for Baron to compete for a rotational role early on, with a chance to contribute on special teams as well.

It’s another swing by Mougey on a high-upside player who fits Robert Saleh’s attacking defensive philosophy.
