Jets Offensive Line Analysis

Olu Fashanu

A recent JetNation forum post by one of our contributors analyzed last season’s Jets offensive line performance using Pro Football Focus grades as the benchmark, reviewing each starter, Alijah Vera-Tucker at right guard, John Simpson at left guard, Joe Tippmann at center, and Olu Fashanu at left tackle, to highlight their run blocking strengths, pass protection improvements, and overall PFF rankings as the team heads into the 2025 campaign.

It’s taken too long to get here and it’s fair to argue we’ve over invested using 3 round 1 + 1 round 2 pick, in addition to free agency.

An imperfect science, but PFF is pretty much all we’ve got as a measuring stick for individual performance.

The biggest takeaways from last year are that we have some good individual parts to work with, who should all have upside given their young age.  Their collective strength is run blocking,g but all have flashed as solid pass blockers.
RG:  AVT was rated as the 9th best guard on PFF’s list (left/right combined).  Always a strong run blocker, he finally broke thru as a top tier pass blocker with a top 5 lowest pressure rate.

LG:  John Simpson had a breakout year and was one of the few FA signings JD hit on, grading as the #11 best guard overall.  Known as an above-average pass blocker, he shined as a run blocker.  Pass blocking was slightly better than average .. dragged down by a few late season sacks that offset an otherwise strong pressure rate.

Center:  Joe Tippmann improved in both facets his sophomore year, grading as PFF’s 8th best Center.  His pass blocking is now roughly average while his run blocking took another step forward.

LT:  Olu Fashanu struggled early at RT but performed very well after switching to his natural position.  As a LT, he graded #12 overall .. #18 as a pass blocker and very surprisingly #4 as a run blocker.  A strong foundation to build off of.
