After reviewing the Jets undrafted free agent signings immediately following April’s draft, we said we believed Purdue offensive lineman Gus Hartwig had a chance to make the team’s practice squad. Now it appears Dan Leberfeld of Jets Confidential agrees.
In a blurb posted to his x account, Leberfeld listed Harwig’s size, football IQ and leadership as qualities that will help him hang around and at least make the practice squad.
“Hartwig has a lot going for him, but just needs to get a little stronger to deal with powerful NFL defensive tackles, so he doesn’t get bull-rushed. However, there is a lot to work with here, so don’t be shocked if this guy hangs around in Florham Park.”
Leberfeld cited Hartwig’s need to get stronger as a reason why the 53-man roster may not be in his immediate future, but Jets fans should be happy with the all-around interior depth on their offensive line.
By adding Josh Myers this offseason, they now have an experienced center to go along with Xavier Newman and Kohl Leavao on the inside.
Newman has experience at both guard and center and looked to be significantly improved last preseason before getting injured when called upon to play in a week seven loss to the Steelers.
Meanwhile, Levao was impressive last preseason and was one of eight players Aaron Glenn and Darren Mougey brought in for an extended look during the team’s rookie mincamp a few weeks back.
