On Friday Jets quarterback Justin Fields gave the Jets a look at what he can be when he’s on time and on target as he turned in his best practice of the preseason. Yesterday, he did what he’s done since his Ohio State days and burned the opposing defense with his legs when his arm, or receivers, let him down.
According to Antwan Staley of the New York Daily News, Fields was 2-10 passing on the day which is…not ideal?
But a closer look from those in attendance tells us that there were some drops from Fields’ receivers and that on one play in particular, there was nothing wrong with Fields’ incompletion. Fields threw a good ball to Josh Reynolds but the coverage from Sauce Gardner was simply perfect. Safe to say Fields won’t be facing many corners who can cover like Sauce can.
So when the offense was sputtering through the air, Fields used his wheels to find the end zone, running for a 25-yard touchdown at one point.
The other big story of the day worth mentioning was the penalties. In all the Jets were flagged a dozen times by the NFL officials on hand. While that number could be alarming, it’s worth mentioning that teams are free to ask those officials to be a bit more liberal with their throwing of the flags. If they want to send a message to their team, i’s possible that somebody asked the refs to go hard and call anything remotely close.
Expect Glenn and the Jets to watch closely to see how Justin Fields responds the next time he’s got his players in full pads.
