Xavier Gipson to be Released: Brian Costello

Xavier Gipson

Per Brian Costello of the New York Post, the New York Jets are releasing wide receiver and return specialist Xavier Gipson. Adam Schefter also confirmed the move.

Brian Costello also provided more thoughts on the move in the NY Post. Gipson’s time with the Jets was defined by flashes of potential, but ultimately, inconsistency and mistakes proved costly. His most recent miscue came in Week One against the Pittsburgh Steelers, when he fumbled on a kickoff return. The turnover was returned for a touchdown, and it ended up being the difference in the Jets’ season-opening loss.

Unfortunately, that wasn’t an isolated incident. Gipson dealt with fumbling issues last season as well, and the Jets’ patience finally ran out.

On top of the ball security concerns, Gipson never developed into a reliable option in the passing game. After showing some promise as a rookie in 2023 with 21 receptions for 229 yards, he was nearly invisible in 2024, finishing with just 6 catches for 39 yards and 1 touchdown.

Xavier Gipson Career Stats (with Jets):

  • 2023: 21 receptions, 229 yards, 0 TDs

  • 2024: 6 receptions, 39 yards, 1 TD

  • Career: 27 receptions, 268 yards, 1 TD

Adding to the decision, head coach Aaron Glenn made it clear on Sunday that players who cost the team games won’t be on the field. It’s a new era of accountability for the Jets, and Gipson became the first example of that philosophy in action.

Coupled with his struggles on special teams and limited role in the offense, the writing was on the wall. The Jets are moving forward without him, ending what once looked like a promising chapter after his rookie campaign.
