As we should come to expect at this point in time, Jets head coach Aaron Glenn did not divulge who his starting quarterback would be this Sunday against the Jaguars, but he did provide an update on the overall health of the QB room. Third-stringer Brady Cook was slated to get all of the reps at practice today as both Justin Fields and Tyrod Taylor are nursing injuries.
For Fields, it’s the sore knee that kept him inactive this past week while Taylor continues to deal with the groin injury that forced him to leave this Sunday’s game against the Dolphins in the first quarter.
The team also added a familiar face in Adrian Martinez who was recently let go by the 49ers. Martinez was the quarterback whose spot Brady Cook took after a preseason battle for the position.
The extra work with the starters could help Cook who came on in relief of Taylor against the Dolphins and finished with some pretty misleading numbers. The box score will tell you that Cook completed just 14 of 30 passes with no touchdowns and two interceptions. But if you watched the game, you saw one pass after another bounce into, out of and through the hands of Jets receivers many times over. One of those being a sure touchdown on a swing pass to John Metchie that he didn’t hold on to.

It seems Rich Cimini of ESPN believes the Jets will start Justin Fields if Taylor can’t go, but that would be regressive and silly. The Fields experiment should be viewed two ways; failed and over.
In nine starts this season, Fields has failed to manage even sixty yards passing, has thrown for more than one touchdown just once (2 vs Dallas), and took 27 sacks despite quality play from a good offensive line. Fields in year five has looked an awful lot like Fields in years 1-4. Turning the ball back over to Fields would take snaps away from a young rookie who the team should be looking to develop.
Given how poorly the Jets defense has been of late, and the level of play they’ll get from either Cook or Fields, the team is unlikely to win any additional games this season. If they manage a win or two with cook playing well, it could mean the Jets have something to work with. Anything they get from Fields will end the same way; with the quarterback moving on after this season.
