Joe Namath: How One Quarterback Changed New York Jets History

Joe Namath

If you look back at the quarterbacks who played for the New York Jets, there is one name everyone is familiar with: Joe Namath.

Joe Namath

Joe Namath is a former quarterback for the New York Jets. He played 12 seasons with the team from 1965 to 1976. Before becoming a Jet, Joe was a standout quarterback at the University of Alabama. He led the team to a national championship in 1964. After his career at Alabama, the Jets selected him first overall in the 1965 AFL Draft, and he signed a three-year contract with the team. Joe Namath played most of his career with the Jets, plus one season with the Rams, before retiring. Now that you know who Joe Namath is, let’s take a closer look at how he became a legend for this team.

Joe Namath became a Jets legend by playing at a high level as a quarterback. Not only was he a great player, but he also led the team to its first and only Super Bowl win against the Baltimore Colts. Statistically, Joe was outstanding, finishing his career with 27,663 passing yards and 173 touchdowns. He earned AFL Player of the Year honors in 1968 and 1969 and then entered the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1985.  He also earned MVP honors during his career.

Joe Namath is a legend. Fans will always remember him as an iconic figure in Jets history. He changed the way teams play the quarterback position in the NFL today. Fans will never forget his statistics and accomplishments. Most of all, his swagger in guaranteeing the victory before Super Bowl III.

It’s been a long time since the Jets drafted a quarterback who made this franchise look great. Hopefully, in 2026, there will be a quarterback out there who can be the next Joe Namath and do great things for this team. The Jets roster needs help. Until then, we can only hope and wait.
