The Rodgers Effect: How Jets Volatility is Changing the Game for New York Bettors

Aaron Rodgers

When Aaron Rodgers joined the Jets in 2023, there was a bit of excitement.

Okay, that’s probably the understatement of the century: there was a lot of excitement. Fans and bettors across New York flooded sportsbooks with wagers, eagerly anticipating the impact a superstar quarterback could have on the team’s performance.

Every game became a high-stakes event, and you were hard-pressed to find a fixture where the Jets weren’t going in as the favorites.

And yet, there’s no Super Bowl hardware sitting in the Jets’ trophy cabinet. The space is filled with dust, and has been since the winter of 1969, when the Jets rocked the sports world by becoming the first American Football League team to defeat an NFL team.

The keyword here is volatility. It wasn’t like the Jets remained winless while Rodgers was their quarterback, but their performance was unpredictable, with comfortable wins but also frustrating losses that created a rollercoaster for bettors, specifically.

And that volatility has remained a trait. Since Rodgers left in 2025, the game for New York bettors has been thoroughly erratic, with sportsbooks having to navigate uncertainty and adjust expectations pretty much week by week. So why is this the case, and how exactly has the betting landscape shifted?

The Rodgers Effect on Betting

To start off, let’s look at the New York betting scene. Just recently, TheLines mobile betting guide revealed all of the best betting apps for New Yorkers and the rest of the US. Combined, all of these betting apps likely see millions of bets a week, with approximately 76 million American adults engaged in sports betting in 2025.

It’s fair to assume, then, that the New York betting scene is highly active, and with the Jets being the top side alongside the Giants, obviously, the wagering volume will remain strong no matter the volatility.

Indeed, it’s this volatility that can present some profitable opportunities. Log on to any one of those betting apps, and the odds for the Jets are often all over the place, with bookmakers constantly adjusting lines to account for inconsistent performances, roster changes, and public betting patterns.

The Rodgers Effect for the Jets

As for why performances are so inconsistent, it all comes down to pressure. Yes, the Rodgers Effect has had an impact on betting, but the reason it’s had an impact on betting is that it’s had an impact on the Jets.

The Rodgers era was characterized by frustrating misfires and shaky team chemistry with such a superstar quarterback on their side, the Jets should have been contenders every season, putting up some stiff competition for the best NFL sides while wiping the floor with the weaker teams in the league. Only they weren’t.

While there were flashes of brilliance, the team felt disjointed and played every game like they knew they were under pressure. Sharp bettors could capitalize on these swings, finding value when bookmakers overreacted to a surprising win, while casual bettors frequently got burned chasing the hype.

The same remains true today, with a team shake-up after Rodgers was released, new pressure spawned from their need to bounce back. While again, there have been excellent wins in the last season and the recent signing of Dane Belton shows a determination to solidify the defense, the Jets performance has remained erratic, with the pressure and expectations clearly still blocking the team from getting back to the playoffs.

Conclusion

For bettors, the Jets are now a high-risk, high-reward proposition, and they have been for the last few years.

Whether or not that will change depends on the team’s ability to establish that chemistry and hone the performance of their new quarterback, whoever that may be now that Justin Fields has been traded to Chiefs, which has created more instability on paper. Although after watching Fields last season, most Jets fans agree this is addition by subtraction.

Until those pieces fall into place, however, New York bettors, and fans too, for that matter, will have to continue navigating the highs and lows that have become such a staple of the Jets seasons.
