He was originally signed by the Oakland Raiders as a rookie free agent on May 4, 2007, and was waived on Sept. 1, 2007. He spent time on the practice squads of the Titans and Saints.

Simmons (6’4″, 246) originally signed with the Jets as an undrafted free agent on May 4. He was released on Sept. 5, then was signed to the practice squad on Sept. 7. He was a three-year starter at Minnesota who appeared in 41 games, finished his collegiate career with 73 receptions for 762 yards and three touchdowns. In 2008, he caught 34 passes for 331 yards with two touchdowns, earning All-Big Ten second-team honors from the media and honorable mention from the coaches, while also being selected as an Academic All-Big Ten honoree.
