We won’t bury the lead, as everyone knows by now, Justin Fields left practice after an 11 on 11 rep. On a pass by Fields to Mason Taylor (which was broken up by Quincy Williams), he went down and was ultimately carted off. After practice, Aaron Glenn reported it was a toe injury, and as I post this,s it seems like the Jets dodged a bullet, and it’s not as severe as it could’ve been. Here is the day two Jets training camp update.
Jets Training Camp General Notes
– Players in jerseys & shorts, practice ran 1:50.
– Players auditioning for the return spots are Malachi Corley, Ontaria Wilson, Arian Smith, Xavier Gipson, and Kene Nwangwu.
– Schedule change I’ve never seen since covering the Jets, they started practice on parallel fields going through 11 on 11’s at “half speed”. The #1’s went against each other on one field while the #2, #3, and #4 rotated reps on the other.
– There were questions about Glenn’s style yesterday, after observing for two days, he constantly rotates between both sides of the ball and all position groups. Following suit, his coordinators,
Tanner Engstrand (OC) & Steve Wilks (DC) rotate through all the position groups they’re responsible for. In the past regime, the coordinators would review their “scripts” while the position coaches would deal with the players.
– Josh Myers was the #1 center today while Joe Tippmann ran with the #2’s.
– The defense won the day as from the start they swarmed the running lanes to shut down the RBs. While the coverage forced the QBs to hold the ball and ultimately run because there was nowhere to throw. Also, once Fields went down, I noticed a drop in offensive execution.
NY Jets Special Teams Notes
– The kickers made their debuts today, and it wasn’t pretty:
* Caden Davis (with Austin McNamara holding) was 2/6 and, in my opinion, showed a very short leg. On his 50-yard attempt (which he missed) he barely got it to the crossbar on a warm July day.
* Harrison Mevis (with Kai Kroger holding) was 4/6, his leg is stronger. Let’s see if he can build on his UFL success and take the job.
NY Jets Defense Notes
– As mentioned before, a strong day by the defense, some highlights:
* Strong double coverage by Brandon Stephens and Tony Adams on Arian Smith as Justin Fields try to hit him on a 30+ yd pass.
* Another good day by Sauce Gardner as he had multiple pass breakups.
* Michael Carter with a blow-up of a screen pass to Jeremy Ruckert from Tyrod Taylor.
* Will McDonald shot the gap and blew up a reverse to Garrett Wilson.
* Stephens also had a solid solo effort as he forced Wilson out of bounds before a corner pass from Taylor reached him.
* Marcelino McCray-Ball (LB) had a “pick 6” on an overthrown screen pass from Brady Cook.
* Jarrick Bernard-Converse flashed again as he had excellent coverage against Quentin Skinner (WR) as he attempted to catch a 30+ yd pass from Adrian Martinez.
* Jarius Monroe with another INT against Cook.
* More blitzing this time from the nickel spot by Jordan Clark (Ryan Clark’s son?)
Jets Training Camp Standouts
– The defense
Concerns
– How long will Justin Fields be out?
– Can the kickers show more?
