If you had “Woody Johnson publicly ripping Justin Fields before mid-season” on your 2025 New York Jets bingo card, today was a good day for you.
In a rare public appearance with the press, Jets owner Johnson offered a vote of confidence to head coach Aaron Glenn, and trampled all over Justin Fields to do so. Clearly frustrated with his team’s 0-7 start, Johnson said he believes in Glenn and has been impressed by the team’s defensive turnaround. It was on offense, specifically at QB, where Johnson laid all of the blame.
“It’s hard when you’ve got the quarterback with the rating we’ve got”, referring to the Jets signal caller, before adding “If you look at any head coach with a quarterback like that, you’re going to see similar results”. Then the owner took it a step further, saying of Fields, “If we can just complete a pass, it would look good”.
Woody Johnson isn’t wrong about Fields’ putrid performance, but it’s rare for an owner, in this day and age, to so clearly throw a player under the bus, no matter how poorly he’s performing.
Benched during Sunday’s loss to the Carolina Panthers off the heels of a historically bad performance in London against the Broncos, Fields has produced fewer than six net passing yards per quarter over his past six quarters of football.
Fields has been so bad for the Jets that following this week’s loss, Aaron Glenn, who has been nothing but supportive of Fields up to this point, said that he has not yet made a decision as to who will start this week on the road against the Bengals.
