NY Jets Training Camp

#JetsCamp Notes: 07/30

Darnold, McCown, Bridgewate

General Notes

– Players in full pads

– Practice ran 2.5 hours

– Kacy Rodgers (DB), Brandon Bryant (S), Xavier Cooper (DL) and Marcus Maye are still out

– During the special teams period punt blocks were the focus.  Multiple stations were set up to concentrate on different aspects and Brant Boyer (STC) was the “punter” as he kicked soccer balls

– A “new QB” we just signed showed up as the warmup period was ending and was welcomed with a team wide “slow clap”

– Todd Bowles stopped practice, gathered the team and delivered a heated message after a sloppy period

– The defense dominated early on as they seemed to be energized by the “new QB” showing up and yelled “new meat” on multiple occasions.  Completions were hard to come by but to the offense’s credit they stabilized and recovered at the end

Player Notes

– Quincy Enunwa was sharp as he looked like his 2016 self.  Running away from DB’s on deep slants and showing good footwork and catching a TD from Sam Darnold during a red zone period

– Leonard Williams continued his strong start to camp with more TFL’s and pressure on the QB’s

– Trenton Cannon “stacks” another good practice as he continues to show his speed.  During a 3rd down period he exploded around the edge for a long gain

– Doug Middleton (S) has been replacing Marcus Maye with the #1’s and has been displaying good range in tandem with Jamal Adams.  Today he picked off Darnold during a team period as Derrick Jones tipped a ball up in the air and Middleton pulled it in

– Jamal Adams talks an incredible amount during practice but a ton of what comes out of his mouth is diagnosing what the offense will do before it happens.  Impressive

– Obum Gwachum (OLB) had another “sack” today during a 11 on 11 period

– Henry Anderson (DE) showed up today as he got a “sack” and pushed the pocket a number of times

QB

– Sam Darnold after three practices on the sideline was clean in terms of handling the ball as there were no fumbles or botched snaps.  His accuracy and ball placement were good during the 1 on 1 WR/CB period as he hit Robby Anderson on a 40+ yard TD.  But in his initial 11 on 11 period he threw an INT to Middleton which I mentioned before and his timing with receivers was off as he struggled.  Darnold recovered though during a red zone period as he was more accurate and threw TD’s to Enunwa and Chris Herndon

– Josh McCown struggled early on but was able to recover as he led the offense to a TD on an acrobatic catch by Jermaine Kearse during the final 11 on 11 period of the day.  And to his credit he sacrificed a number of his reps early on to Darnold so he could get up to speed quicker

– Teddy Bridgewater had the same type of day as McCown as he struggled early but led the offense to a long TD drive in the final 11 on 11 period.  Lucky Whitehead made a diving catch for the score

Keep An Eye On

– Frankie Luvu (OLB) a UDFA out of Wash. St.  He had a “sack” and a fumble recovery during a
red zone period

Concerns

– Too many penalties again

– Brandon Shell left early, hopefully he’s not hurt seriously

Standouts

– The defense

– The parties that finally acted like adults and ended the Darnold contract nonsense
